you have a deceased plant and in the soil there's still some live shpagnum moss? You grow it!

(note, I dropped it once and something tried to dig in it)

That isn't Sphagnum. Sphagnum is very distinct.

I hate that stuff. It makes it more difficult to water since the water beads off to the sides and doesn't absorb all over very effectively.

I would. It's not beneficial or useful in the way LFS is. It springs up in peat all the time, so even if you get rid of it, you'll see it again sometime soon.
