Peat pucks, insecticides

Hi,

How often are peat products treated with pesticides? In specific, I'm wondering about those dried and compressed peat pucks that are bound up in netting. They are used to start seedlings.

I've often wondered if they are really safe to use in aquatic systems. Of course, I could test it out myself by adding them to a jar of water and seeing if any small organisms appear, but since I haven't done that, I thought I'd ask here.

Take care!

Chris -

Are you referring to the "Jiffy Pot" pellets? If so, I'm not aware of any pesticides used on these. They MAY have been treated with a wetting agent to help them absorb water once you use them, though.

I would suggest contacting the manufacturer and asking them directly. That way you can know for sure which brands are safe for your uses.
