Jerry,
Here are some fish forums that should help:

I myself like live plants. Some easy plants are Java moss, Java Fern, Hornwort, Cryptocoryne wendtii, Rotala rotundifolia. All which has grow very well with just 1 1/2 watts of light. Typical lighting for a 10 gallon tank. I use Hagens Aqua-glo bulbs. Tetra pride fertilizer.
Zebra fish and Whiteclouds are very hardy fish.

Here's another perspective: Guppies, mollies, platys, and swords. Water Sprite & plant bulbs.
