Trying to figure out how small of a pup one can "break" off of a mother plant and still have it do a tad more than just rot.

I've succeeded with pretty small pups, as long as there was good leaf development. But bigger is better for pups.

Agreed. I usually wait until they are at least 2-3" tall and/or have a well-developed outer layer of leaves with new ones forming in the cup.

I have been succesful with pretty small but the larger you go the more likely for survival especially in a household setting. The babies I had were kept in a upside-down and right-side-up cup thing for humidity until established. (Kinda like what the African Violet people do with cuttings)
