whatchya got? how do you go about dividing the minis? i need a breakdown of how to do so and depending on the case, i might be able to part with some divisions. all of my orchids stay at most 5 inches, the largest being Maxillaria schunkeana so we can potentially be trading buddies soon. i think swords would want in on this as well.
Dividing up orchids is more of an artform than a science. The Bulbo types are easy just cut off a section with roots and bulbs and your done.
I just divided up an Epidendrum longirepens tonight and you basically just look for the smallest stem part of the plant and SNIP with some very sharp disinfected scissors. Fire is a great disinfectant
.
The Pleurothallis...well thats were the real artform starts, you have to figure out where to tear...rip...or cut, that will leave the most stems with roots still attached to them. That tearing sound is bad....Some are easier than others. I will be dividing up a Pheurothallis pruinosa this weekend and its going to be kinda stressful.
The masdies and Maxies don't like me, I've never been able to grow them well. They just kindof hang around until I feel bad for them and find them a new home.
As for what I will be/have divided up so far.
Pleurothallis pruinosa (not done)
Pleurothallis sigmoidea (not done)
Epidendrum longirepens (2 plants)
Epidendrum congestoides (3 or so smaller ones)
Lepanthopsis astrophora 'Stalky' (3 or so small keiki's)
Pleurothallis luctuosa (not done)
Cischweinfia rostrata (not done)
Bulbophyllum gamblei (1 so far, will do more)
Pleurothallis corniculata (missed spelling that right by 1 letter, I have an orchid problem..., 1 done)
Pleurothallis alata (2 done)
Probably a few more but thats a good start.
