Cephalotus seeds - fyi

  • #21
:hail:Very Nice! What set up did you put the seeds under?

I got a packet of these too and so far nothing. I stratified half for 8 weeks in the fridge and no strat on the others. I have them under light, soil is moist, inside ziplocks, temps between 65 night and 80 day. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
You got these from the ICPS seedbank? It sounds like you've got better conditions than I do ... ???
What set up did you put the seeds under?
In 2008, I planted seeds in existing Cephalotus pots in my office terrarium. I tried to very lightly cover (or sorta cover) the seeds.

This time around, I mixed up some media (peat, aps, sand, lsf), individually planted the seeds (pushing them down firmly into the media) & then I tried to lightly cover them. I then capped it with a small, clear dixie cup over the pot (with a few holes) & placed it ~6" below shoplights. I was hoping that the light would warm up the small enclosure since the winter temps in the room only get up to 65-68*F. I also sprinkled freshly-mixed Trichoderma solution over the seeds & media when I was done planting.

I only did this because I wanted to confirm that the seeds were viable - I suspect that this little pot may find its way into the NASC auction this spring ... :-O

Yup, these are from the second round of available seeds this season. I even lightly covered a few of the seeds with soil (most are on the surface) and still nothing. I'm holding out some hope, but it's discouraging to see that they're sprouting for others. I'll keep you posted.

And thank you for sending them to the seed bank!!

Germination at last!

I planted 17 seeds from the first batch on August 22 of 2010. Just today I noticed 5-6 cotyledons (about 5.5 months later!)

Pics are from my cell, so the resolution is pretty worthless:

I have another couple batches that I planted in October, so I guess I can hold out hope for a few more months.

Been looking for ceph seeds myself, but not a member. Can non-members of ICPS get seeds?

Nope gotta be a memeber and then they are usually reser ed for member who have donated a couple times or enough seeds...

Thanx for the info. Guess I will wait for some to show up somewhere from a trustworthy source.

DJ57:
The ICPS store currently does not have Cephalotus seed to offer, so it's moot. That was, however, where I obtained my seeds last September. I recall there were about ten seeds in the pack, which I sowed on finely chopped Sphagnum and stratified in the fridge for six weeks. I then moved the pot out into my Nepenthes greenhouse (highland/intermediate) for germination. A week ago the first seedling appeared, and within days seven more were up. I believe there are still eight in total, which I think is very good germination! (80%) the first true leaf is starting to show on two of these now. I'll try to get a photo today.

You can buy seed off eBay if you are desperate, but it's a gamble whether they are viable or not. perhaps someone here can speak to their experience with eBay-bought Cephalotus seed? Some sellers may be more reliable than others.

LOL, yeah I did not look at the dates of original start of thread before posting, just saw ceph seed and got excited I guess. Thanx for your info on how you did your seeds, very good germination rate and congrats! I am very patient and will wait for a reliable source to come along rather than the crap shoot of Ebay stuff, LOL. Would love to see pics of your seedlings.

i have 6 out of 10 growing from the same seed no statification, the others that never sprouted were in my terrarium where the ones in the window that i thought wouldnt make it cus its cold are the only ones that took and allready have little pitchers. ill take some pics if my camera does a good enough job on the small things

While true when small amounts of seed are donated, this fall there were over 30 pkts of seed in the store.

A reliable source is a good thing as well as time-of-year to ensure you're getting fresh seed (typically fall in the Northern hemisphere & 6 months from that in the South). Patience is a very good trait when growing Cephs from seed ... :-O

Great to hear that people are getting germination!! :banana2: Maybe someday we'll figure out why some folks struggle with these seeds ...

Honestly mine did best in a real cold window everyone that was in that window sprouted and it was as low as -15 F sometimes at night.....granted it is 70 inside but the window temp itself was real cold

---------- Post added at 04:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:04 PM ----------

and now that i think of it it was poor lighting too as they were in and around all my big nepenthes

Fall eh, I did not know that. My experience is showiing, or lack of, :-D

Better to try and stuggle than never trying at all, LOL. Stuggle equals gaining experience for next time. Yeah, can't be happy growing CPs if no patience, but the rewards are awsome  Easy for me as I love watching the babies grow.

They're still growing well so I figured I'd grab an updated pic - last time I counted, there were over 30 of the little guys. I'm still seeing 1-2 new germinations every week or two...

Such a wonderful sight, good job!! :hail:

They look great! I'm still jealous - mine still haven't sprouted. :(

That is truly a great sight to see. It seems like I haven't seen enough seed-grown Cephalotus in my days.

I'd love to trade you for one of these in the future when they get decent sized. I've yet to have a Cephalotus survive for me. :( Maybe a seed-grown individual would have a better chance at survival.

True - it seems not that many people get their plants to flower & even fewer get seed to germinate ... what's up with that?

I'd love to trade you for one of these in the future when they get decent sized. I've yet to have a Cephalotus survive for me. :( Maybe a seed-grown individual would have a better chance at survival.
I doubt a sg plant would change whatever is wrong with your conditions. Either way, I don't plan to keep these much longer ...
I suspect that this little pot may find its way into the NASC auction this spring ... :-O
Better to plan on winning the bidding or negotiate w/ the winner ... :-O

I grew several seedling to adulthood a few years back (still have one - hopefully should flower this year). Over the last year, I've gathered up several different clones - as they mature I hope to do some crossing and get some interesting genetic diversity with my seedlings & see if anything interesting pops up .... ???
