Fishkeeping is my second hobby, equal in my heart to CP's (if you can believe that!)

I got an eclipse hood, almost brand new at the pawn shop for TWO DOLLARS! i've got everything else in the basement, but I'm going to buy a new 10 gallon aquarium from wal-mart.

What do you guys suggest i stock it with! this is the hardest part! MY favorite FW fish is Pantodon Bucholzii (sp?). Do you guys think a ten gallon is large enough to keep one of these and maybe a few Corydoras? I know this may be stretching (or even bursting!) the limits, but I don't mind changing water frequently (you know my first FW aquarium was a 30 gallon Hex and over 2 years I never changed the water once!)

Now to the plants, Do I really NEED a co2 setup to keep Java Moss and Java Fern?

I wouldn't recommend keeping an African Butterfly fish in a 10 gallon aquarium long term. They get about 4-5 inches in length and only utilize the top area of the tank. They will also eat any fish that gets close enough and that will fit inside it's mouth.

CO2 injection is not needed for Java Moss and Java Fern. I would recommend getting some compact fluorescent bulbs though. I'm not sure what kind of bulbs an Eclipse hood takes, but if they are the normal screw-in incandescent bulbs, then you can replace them with these: http://www.petsmart.com/global....20&Ne=2

That will give you a total of 20 watts which equals 2 watts per gallon. That's more than enough to grow Java Moss and Fern. I'd recommend getting the bulbs at Walmart, they are a few dollars cheaper there. I use them in all of my 10 gallon aquariums and can grow a number of different plants.

    I hope this helps,

    WELCOME!

No? Oh well no biggie. My 75 gallon reef tank is home to my cp's and I can't use that hehe. Eclipse takes NO fluorescents.

What species, and how many, do you reccomend?

What plants do you grow and do you inject? I've never grown freshwater plants before. I want to steer clear of injecting if i can help it. I can grow coral like a maniac but freshwater plants are so intimidating!

i have a couple tanks and i would say that if you are going with 10 gal. don't do aggressive fish. in a small tank you need community fish.

hehe, I've never had a small aquarium so I don't know these rules.

I'm not going to let my obsession get ahold of me this time! No starting at 10 then a 20 then 55 then 75.....

You can grow almost any plant without CO2. CO2 is injected to make plants grow at supernatural rates. Those CO2 levels aren't found in the wild.

Never had luck with banana plants.

Plants that grew very well for me:
Ceratophyllum demersum, Cryptocoryne crispatula, Cryptocoryne wendtii, Echinodorus rubin, Pistia stratiotes, Rotala rotundifolia, Sagittaria subulata, Salvinia molesta, and Vesicularia dubyana.
