If you add fish I would not add neon tetras with a male betta. Male bettas are agressive to brightly colored fish and will kill them.

I thought male bettas were only aggressive with other male bettas. I've read and seen pics of male bettas swimming just fine with schools of fish.

I've had a male betta with a bunch of neons and other fish. It didn't even bother gouramis. It was a boring fish

Every one I had would attact other brightly colored fish. I guess he thought they were other bettas. I have seen them in tanks with other fish, but they were not brightly colored ones. Maybe thats just my experience.

Sounds like a cool project. Think...when you're done you can let the tank dry out...and in a month add water and start over again.

    pretty cool project dude.

btw, volcanic rocks are known for leaching metals and other undesirables into tank water. that enough is reason enough not to use them.

Takashi amano is one of my aquarium heroes. he makes very cool tanks. one of my dreams is to take what i have learned in fresh water planted aquaria, and one day do a mangrove setup w/ sea grasses and a big ol puffer fish.

Thank you! I love amano! He uses aquaria like a canvas and his tanks are like paintings!

Very interesting Idea. I kind of wanted to do that with pipefish and seahorses, but i'm too lazy to grow live food and feed them with a pipette.
