That is very true. We haven't built a new refinery in the U.S. since "76 because of all of the misguided rules and regulations.

My Exon/Mobile, ConocoPhillips and Shell Oil stock are doing quite fine thank you...waaaay more income to me than outgo at the pump.

93 octane to feed my Tbird, $3.26 here in South Florida.

OK, let's say the gas companies work at their 10% profit level. (Profit, by the way, is what's left AFTER things like the $400,000,000.00 retirement package for the Exxon CEO.)

When gas was $1.00/gallon, they made $.10 profit.

Raise prices to $3.00/gallon, they make $.30 profit for doing no extra work.

    See how that's gouging?

By the way, that $10,000,000,000.00 profit they made was for the fourth QUARTER last year. Not the year, the quarter. And that was the highest quarterly profit for any public company in history! They made another $8,500,000,000.00 profit THIS quarter.

Exxon's profits for the QUARTER are greater than the annual GDP for many of the oil producing countries like Kuwait or the UAE.

Capslock <-- feeling a bit gouged.

No I do not see how that is gouging. Perhaps you did not read the formula that some one else posted...Increased demand + less supply = rising prices. That is a basic, indisputable fact of business. The high price of gas is our own fault. There are plenty of alternatives to foriegn oil out there but I don't see many people rising up and demanding, nuclear (Iran is trying nuclear and we get all upset.), wind, solar, oil shale, drilling in ANWAR, coal gassification etc...those choices may kill a spotted owl...but that sure beats walking to work.

I believe that fancy Evian water you drink is $22.00 per gallon. What kinda' profit margin is that? Nyquil is over $150 per gallon and that is nothing but alcohol, water and asprin.

the feds need to stay out of it, they make things worse not better. prices at the pump rose, demand stayed the same and even increased. how in the hell is that gouging? tell me if you could make $20 per D. capensis dont tell me you wouldnt be selling as many of those weedy nice guys as you could. its a free market, if ppl are willing to pay the price it isnt gouging.

like Bruce has said the high price of gas can be a good thing, i think he is a lil off in what is good about it though. the #1 good thing about $70+ per barrel crude is it suddenly makes finding alternatives to crude PROFITABLE, not guberment subsidising, not grant driven it means that the E85, oil shale and coal gasification are actually looking like they will be profitable there for more companies will SERIOUSLY look at producing them and not "researching" them for a tax break
