Good for England. Portugal have 2 suspended players, including Deco.
The commentators were saying the exact same thing as you, but I have to strongly disagree. The players are really who're at fault. The plants (namely the Portuguese) started the game with a bunch of fouls. The ref can't NOT call them. If people continue to offend, the ref has to continue to get cards. Here's an idea if you don't want to get a card: don't foul on other players from behind, don't hit other players in dispute, don't grab shirts, don't argue with the ref.Originally Posted by [b
The players were unruley (it all started with Portugal.) If people make an offence where a card is warranted, then they should expect a card. All the ref could have done is given fouls instead of cards, and I don't see that alleviating the problem. I think the ref needs some sort of other power, like sending players out for a set time so they can "cool off," anything, really.
But I just don't see how you can blame it on the ref in this last game. The Italy v US game is another story, those were bad calls.
Well I really wonder who is the real culprit here. Did you know that FIFA suspended Mastroeni THREE GAMES for that red card he got in game 2!!? Weather it be FIFA or the refs themselves, it really makes for some crappy soccer if you ask me.
Trouble really is that you never know what the ref is going to call.. *I have seen plenty of fouls go uncalled.. *even today I saw a guy get kicked in the face and no foul was called. Minutes later a guy gets a yellow card cause the guy running beside him tripped over his own big feet. With 5 officials on the field, and all of them wired with radio communication, there is absolutely no reason why this obscene officiating should be continuing.
I must admit that I missed a good portion of the first half today, so I will take your word for it about Portugal's play. What I did see of the game did not impress me about the officials in the least.. *All I saw was a ref who was throwing cards out like he was auditioning for a dealers job in a Vegas casino.
There are only 2 infinite things... the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not too sure about the universe.
I know what you're saying- it's frustrating to see things go uncalled because a ref didn't see it. HELLO FIFA, we're not in the stone age any more! I'd rather see replays used to make calls than see blatant fouls and goals-that-should-be go uncalled. I understand that refs need to maintain authority, but sometimes it comes at too high of a price.
With the way that the game went, I don't think the number of cards brought out was very unreasonable. There was pushing and shouting and hitting. I could have sworn I was watching a baseball game. It was just a bad game all around.
Replays are disruptive in American football, in which play is stopped most of the time anyway. *How can they possibly work in soccer?

It really sucks that Korea lost to Sweden or Switzerland or something by 2-0. My fellow Korean friends were crying.
Well, the idea isn't to look at footage of every foul. In the time that it takes to settle everyone down after a goal-in-question, a ref, anyone at that, could view the footage. Let refs keep the offsides calls and things like that because otherwise play would become disrupted; one of soccers charms is that it's an intense game requiring not only agility, but endurance as well. Stopping the game for every could would kill the game, that much is obvious.Originally Posted by [b
There are far too many penalties being called. *These are big boys...professionals...let them "play ball".
I predict an all American final...Brasil vs Argentina...with Brasil the eventual winner.

Boo for the game that took place about an hour ago.
This is why I'd like to see some form of replays used. A grossly unfair pentaly kick was awarded to the Italians in the last 5 some seconds of stoppage time, giving them the win. Absolutely ridiculous.
Furthermore, officiating was bad again; I'd like to see more fouls given instead of cards!
