Everything is explainable. The seemingly unexplainable is but a result of our insufficient knowledge.- Hans Brewer

The main benefit of a PNG is something we don't really get to take advantage of. PNG would have been the format for the web if Microsoft hadn't screwed us over yet again.
What separates a PNG from a GIF or JPG is that it allows 8-bit transparency. JPG has no transparency, GIF allows only 1-bit transparency (a single color is or isn't transparent). 8-bit transparency is full-on photoshop-quality transparency. So really a PNG is a 32-bit file if taken full advantage of... 24 bits for color (16.7 million colors, roughly 0.7 million more than the average eye can differentiate, so the other bits can be used for other purposes), and the additional 8 bits (calculates to 256) for variable levels of transparency.
PNGs have been around for years, and until the upcoming version IE has never supported PNG transparency. Had it been supported, a lot of new web design techniques would have caught on (real dropshadows instead of fake hacky ones, for example) and the web would be a much prettier place.
Just about every other browser has supported it for years. But IE is the majority audience. And now that it will be supported we still have to wait a year or more for the majority to have the new version, or even better, the majority is no longer IE at all.
People think people are angry with Microsoft for abstract, silly reasons that aren't really applicable to their actual lives. Web designers suffer directly for Microsoft's choices on a daily basis. Just about everything we do requires 30% more work just to make IE happy.
So be glad if you're one of the people who hate them abstractly.
Yah! I toatally agree! Macs SUCK!
