Road of death...pics

Some of you may have seen the Discovery Channel's "Road of Death". Here are a bunch of still photos of it.
For those who didn't...This is a mountain road in Bolivia that just has to be the most dangerous in the world.
I have been to Bolivia (I have never forgiven them for shooting Butch and Sundance) a number of times but never got to drive "La via del muerte".
Hey Ozzy/PAK I'll put the top down on the Tbird and we can take a nice Sunday afternoon drive.

I don't have the capability of posting the photos, so you will just have to click on each link...it is worth the trouble.

OMG! I didn't know anything like that existed! That looks super dangerous! How many people die each year on that highway?

BTW nice pics!

The last picture is wild! I just received an email yesterday with a similar set of pictures, although it a path/trail all over this cliff/mountain and the bicyclists cruising around doing wheelies. The subject of the email was "When helmets make no sense."

I always love seeing stuff like this since I have little worldly traveling experience!

xvart.

That is absolutely insane. And I thought Jamaica was bad. How pampered are we Americans? Thanks for sharing.

At first I thought "no biggie" Been on some hairy roads in the mountains of Switzerland, especially in the Interlaken area... and people drive fast there.
Then when I got to the end of the pics I said "forget it, that's crazy"
The carved out montain road pics were really cool too!!

I did not take those pics Trapper...wish I could have had the experience of flying down that canyon.
I do not remember how many died building the road or how many "tip over" on the road each week. Perhaps some of you who saw the TV special will recall.
I know they like their alcholic beverages down there, especially a 100 proof drink they call Pisco  , and have a wee bit of a problem even on the straight and level...so I am am sure quite a few don't make it on these twistys.

Oh ok, yeah I don't think they should be drunk while driving on that road!

I saw the show about the road. It's really crazy.

Since they are in Bolivia, Trapper, who cares if they drink and drive. If they come here with those habits, it will be a rude suprise. Besides, that road is great population control for the country. Idiots DO NOT survive. And like anywhere else, take the occasional innocent one with them.

  • Hahaha, good point!

:0o: Wow! :0o:
Lots of nice cargo trucks waiting to slip right on down! Imagine how it is at night!!!! Lauderdale, do you know if the road is mainly used for transporting goods(cargo trucks) or is it used by everyday travelers or commuters as well?

Thanks for posting a few of the photos Ozzy...now about that Sunday afternoon drive. :-))

joosa, The road connects La Paz, the capital with the interior of the country. I know that it goes to Cochabamba and beyond. It is a general purpose highway, trucks, autos, maybe a few tourists but everday commuting as we know it is probably out of the question...at least it would be for me.

There is a guy in La Paz who offers BICYCLE tours down the road. Now that would be really interesting, or suicidal.

Bugweed you have a point, but heaven forbid anything like that gets put up over here. You would have law suits out the wazoo over the road.

And to the person who said we are spoiled over here in America, you are absolutely correct. In our high and mightiness we forget how it is in other places.

Haha! In a word.... No! lol The tunnel-y road through the rock looks ok but not that road with the sheer drop! I'd be scared to death. I wouldn't mind going to Bolivia though. They have great minerals including spectacular vivianite!

I can't imagine those trucks having to drive that. Geeezzz.

Now...a drive down a nice pretty country road in the T-bird sounds great! Followed by dinner by Chef Jan. :)

Hey PAK,

What about the bicycle tour? It is all down hill, not much pedaling. Drink a wee bit of that Pisco and we could be at the bottom in no time.

They have very good food down there. I know of a little place in La Paz that has strolling Mariachis, serves a really great marinated strip steak (grass fed, lean and tasty), spicy black beans/rice, fried plantains and has tres leche (three milk) cake with fresh homemade coffe ice cream for desert.

The last time I ate there, the price for four of us was $18.00 US...including a bottle of superb red wine. I left a $3 tip and the waiter wanted to give me his first-born daughter. :nono:

They are building a better road, but this road is one of the most important roads

I think its something like hundred's a year die on that road. I dont rember the number im sure you could google it.

On the show they seemed preatty up tight about rules with drinking and being under the influence of any thing.

Chewing coca leaves is acceptable...and legal...in most of the Andean Countries. I really did not know any of the locals who did not use it. I was, at the time, 22 years old, 5' 11" 175# and hard as nails. Most of them were 120# soaking wet and could out march us Gringos while carrying a 75# pack over a 10,000 ft mountain pass. The coca made them immune to cold and altitude sickness.
However, give them a little of the local firewater and they folded pretty quickly.

PAK, Ozzy, I guess the bicycle tour is not going to happen?

PAK, Bolivia is famous for its very high quality Amatrine. You can buy beautiful specimens in fleamarkets all over the country.
