One mile from my house

I recently got some topo maps and I've been looking for some good places to search for cp's. I noticed that there is area about 5 miles around labeled "wetlands" about one mile from my house. I have been by this area thousands of times but it doesn't look like any cp's would be there.

Ever since I saw this area on the map, I have been planning to explore the area. Today I finally got the chance to explore it.

I got all my gear together and I planned to spend about half the day exploring. The area was extremely dry, but we are in an extreme drought, so it was hard to tell what was normally wet. Every once in awhile I would see a really low spot. I could tell that these areas normally hold water, but now they are bone dry. I could see all the "marker" plants so I knew that I was in a good area for cp's . First I found a S.flava that was growing by itself. No other cp's was around this lone flava. It's the closest one I have yet to find to my house. It's 1.1 miles away.

Then I found a four wheeler trail and I followed it until I found a little trail that headed deeper into the wetland. As soon as I turned onto this trail I found a great D.capillaris colony.

Right in the middle of this patch of D.capillaris was this plant.

There was hundreds of D.capillaris growing within a few feet.

Farther along this trail I found these D.brevifolia.

After walking past them 3 times I find 5 more S.flavas.

Heres an example of how dry the area is.

I only explored a fraction of this property. I had a malfunction with my brand new water bladder, and today was 95f. I had a mile and a half walk home so I decided to call it a day and get home safe. By the time I got home I was feeling the effect of the heat. It took me the rest of the day to recover from this trip. I hope to explore the rest of this area soon.

Beautiful! Now to get some rain. Lucky you... just search this random wetland near your house and find CPs. :p Wish I was that lucky.

Have a good one!

Awesome! Thanks for sharing Ozzy. :)

What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I certainly didn't do anything near that cool yesterday... How much of the area do you have left to explore? Is it really big?

xvart.

He's Ozzy, why would he leave any part of that area un-explored! Wish I lived near native CP growing area.

If you walk around the outer perimeter it's a 5 mile walk. I probably explored less than one square mile of it.

Because my brand new water bladder malfunctioned. I filled it half way up and froze it. I was planning to fill the rest of it with water before I left. I didn't position it right and the ice blocked off the cap so I couldn't put more water in it. I took a big bottle of water and planned to drink that while the ice melted. There was a crack in the fitting that connects to the mouth piece. So I couldn't get the water out of the bladder. When the water in the bottler was almost gone I knew I had to start home. I still had about a mile and a half to get home. It was 93f and close to 100% humidity.

I may be bullet proof but I learned a long time ago that I can only survive so long with no water in the woods.

Just a word of caution. I wonder if we should really reveal too much about where we find cps in the wild. I HOPE everyone on this forum would be honest and not try to take some plants home with them.

Of course, we don't know precisely where this person lives!

Even if you know where I live, I'm sure you'd never be able to find this location. Trust me there are plants easier to find and get to than these. The poachers already know where to look anyway. I am trying to document every site that I find so there will be some record of them when they are gone.

There's no reason to keep S. flava locations a secret, Pendersonplants. You can see them on the side of the road in ditches in many places in the south. One of my favorite places is the panhandle, you'd have a hard time not finding something cool there!

Other plants, though, should be kept a secret and if you know the right people and are trustworthy, then you'll see them in the wild one day. S. flava certainly isn't one of them :) Not sure what I fear more, poachers or development. Probably the latter, and anyone who's stupid enough to poach in this community will be ostracized and reported.

Ok. I just know that these plants are in peril in many areas. Have seen too many pictures of where sarracenia pitchers were harvested for the cut plant trade.

I tend to error on the cautious side when these plants are found outside of protected wetlands in Michigan.

Had no idea on how common they are in the south.

Hmmm. will have to purchase some s. flava cultivars.
