    People hit all the major points and I'll just add that plants prefer ammonia to nitrate because the N in ammonia is already reduced and the plant doesn't have to expend energy to reduce nitrate-N.

    thanks guys that all helps a lot... ammonia works then! crazy.

    though part of the question talked about "what would you recommend that the farmer use on next year's crop" and after hearing av8tor's story.... i said "skip the fertilizer and grow soybeans."

    If i remember correctly the NH3 we used had a pH of 14, very wicked stuff, 50 ppm made breathing difficult and 450ppm was lethal, even the hazmat rated boots we wore would start desolving after 30 mins of exposure to the liquid... which wasnt a big issue, the air tanks ran out at the same time LOL

    but it was not your normal stuff, it had to be very pure to be usable at the temp range we were dealing with (-40f)
