Father/daughter Talk

FATHER/DAUGHTER TALK

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like
so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal
Democrat, and was very much in favor of the redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch
Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she
had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt
that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep
what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to
higher taxes on the rich and the addition of more government welfare
programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had
to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking
how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0
GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she
was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which
left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She
didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college
friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, "How is your friend Audrey
doing?" She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy
classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so
popular on campus, college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all
the parties, and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes
because she's too hung over."

Her father asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's
office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend
who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly
that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily
fired back, "That wouldn't be fair! I have worked really hard for my
grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has
done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail
off !"

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently,

"Welcome to the Republican Party."

Exactly why sometimes it frightens me to think the dems could take over again. I don't mind social programs, but I do mind income redistribution. to make it all "fair". What I think is fair is that if you work hard for it you reap the benefits. I do not like deadbeats! I do not study in college, and I make B's I cannot get mad at those that are making A's because they are studying. The same thing with income. If your working hard you should have more. If you want to work at McDonald's your whole life so you can earn a welfare check I despise you.

...I don't think grades relate too well to income. I also don't believe in redistribution of wealth... but some of those things, i.e., higher taxes for the rich, are pretty reasonable. I don't think people should have to pay a higher tax than the rest of us because they are rich, just a tax that is proportionally equal to what everybody else pays. It isn't fair to say "If you earn less than $100,000, you pay a 10% tax on all of it, but if you earn more than $100,000, you pay 10% on only the first $100,000 and 5% on the rest." Different taxes for different income brackets are a bad idea. That's how the government ends up with a deficit.

I'm not a democrat either... political parties are bad. Vote for the best candidate, not your favourite party.

Any communists on the forum?

Yeah, political parties are bad. Didn't you guys listen to George Washington's final statements as president? :D

The problem is they both are crap these days and forget getting a third party in there. It's not going to happen.

Maxx this country is a far cry from what our founding fathers envisioned. It is a joke to think we are doing it the same way. Also I bet our founding fathers are rolling over in their graves at what is happening in politics today. They give themselves pay raises and do everything to benefit them and screw the people. We get the leftovers.

Ridiculous social welfare programs and out of control "defense" spending are how the gov't ends up with a deficit :D.

No kidding. How many people see a political debate coming on here?

Don't forget about borrowing from other countries and owing the Federal Reserve.

I remember that parable well JB. It bares repeating every once in a while. :)

Speaking of Federal Reserve; can anyone find it in the government section of their local phone book? I just cannot seem to find it in mine............ ;)

That is so stupid and does not reflect our political parties. I'm a registered independent and I don't belong to either party.

You can't tell me that you believe that Bill Gates deserves tax breaks when the average person is struggling to buy enough gas to get back and forth to work.

It's got nothing to do with how hard you work or study like your dumb little story put it. It's got to do with making the people that make millions pay their fair share.
The republican party is run by the rich and it's first goal is to make sure the rich gets richer and keeping regular people working to keep them rich. They use religion, and religious issues to keep them in power.

I'm voting democrat this election because I can't support a party that supported an idiot for 8 years.

It doesn't Ozzy? What are you saying Ozzy, that the same % you pay shouldn't be the same % the rich pay? Their % = higher amount than your % equals because they start out with more. If you really wanted to be fair then everyone would pay the same % no deductions no nothing. Flat tax across the board. That is fair, but just because someone makes more doesn't mean they should pay higher % than you or I.

That story fits right in with taxes in my book. A lot of the rich, not all, but a lot have worked hard to get there. Why should they pay a higher % than you or I just to give their income to someone who chooses not to work as hard?

I don't think it is stupid and I do think it reflects things pretty good. I don't know about you, but I don't plan on being at the poverty level for the rest of my life. If you want it to be fair then everyone should pay the same % not the upper class paying more or the middle class paying more %. So go ahead slam me for my opinions.

I know the system is broke and IMO NONE of the people running for president can or will do anything to fix it. The system is broke and needs to be fixed Just going with the lesser of the two evils like I did last election. Because Bush has always been better then the people the Dems were putting up against him.

I can't speak for him, but I think Ozzy misunderstood you.

If conservatives stuck to their roots and remained FISCAL conservatives instead of SOCIAL conservatives, like Josh and Ron, things would be so nice. Ditto for the Democrats. It would be so nice if we only fought about money instead of morals. When did things go wrong? Of course, I have no room to talk :p

I think the inheritance tax is REALLY stupid. I can't see how that's legal because they taxed the money when your relative was alive, and then they take another third when they die. They tax the same money twice! And income tax. You know, theres not even a law that says we have to pay income tax! There was a documentary on FSTV all about it the other day. I was shocked!

I don't believe that anyone should be taxed more or less. I don't see why the Democrats want to give tax breaks to people with income under 150K or so. I forgot the exact number. Is it me, or does a person with a six figure income not need a tax break? Let's lower than to 50K. Unless they means family income, but IIRC they meant individual.

ive never cared for politics, to me its one of those topics that just blows up and everyone ends up upset or worked up and this thread will just go on and on about who is right and who is wrong. no matter how much you think you know either, the argument will go no where and someone will think they know more. no one ever knows EVERYTHING there is to know, just what they want you to know. might as argue with a brick wall, atleast it wont have anything to say.

as for taxes.....there is nothing worse to me than paying taxes, and ive yet to receive an actual refund instead of paying, EVER. Although, the relief fund that Bush had approved a few years back did get me a check, which i later found out that they took that $350 check that the IRS sent me ended up being added to my debt of $15k+. talk about a screwed up system, why even send it?. i cant wait till the day i move away from this hell hole thats run by retards calling themselves politicians.

if you are going to argue taxes, i would expect that you have real world experience in dealing with taxes and not just reading up on the internet or learning from TV. nothing ever works like its supposed to, its just how we roll.

my 2 cents,

Also I bet our founding fathers are rolling over in their graves at what is happening in politics today.

actually not quite......if yah read alot on what Washington, Jefferson and the like believed, all pretty well knew we would end up where we are.....hell the first tax was brought about by Washington himself, after we went to war with England because of taxes, sure went over well to, look up the Whiskey Rebellion.........it was inevitable that we would get here, hell the founding fathers knew that over 200 years ago........all i can say is the next 20 years are going to be EXTREAMLY interesting in this country cause alot of crap is going to come to a head........ive got no clue how every thing's going to come out but its going to be an interesting ride none the less......

its not a refund....in order to have a refund you have to have a surplus.......its a loan from the Chinese

didnt mean to use refund in the sentence, just a plain check.

Actually businesses don't pay taxes; they pass the cost on to the consumer. So punitive taxes on the productive businesses really only reflects back onto us, the consumers. Businesses are what produces things/services and employs workers (income earners). Once upon a time we (the US) used to pay the cost of government with import tariffs; we never used to have an income tax prior to 1916, IIRC.

Don't fall for this class-warfare manure that the Dems are throwing out. Terms like "pay their fair share" and "tax the rich" are smoke screens and down right divisive rhetoric designed to set American against American based on race, gender, income, what-have-you. We’re all better than that.

We need to stick together as a freedom loving people and resist to our utmost the creeping socialism that has caused so many harmful divisions. Let us not be manipulated any further.

Class warfare? Democrats? I thought it was coming from Lou Dobbs! When he's not talking about illegal immigrants, he's talking about class warfare. This "class warfare" crap is BS. The Bourgeoisie and Bobo's aren't at fiscal war with the Proletariat.

I think it's funny how people toss around the words "upper class" and "elite". In actuality, you can have more money that Ross Perot but unless you also have social influence, you're not "upper class" or "elite" if you go by definition. People say Obama or Hillary are "elite" after they say something condescending, but they were already elite to begin with. They're rich and have social influence. That makes them elite by definition, even if they were both saints beloved be ALL Americans. It's strange how it jumps from middle, upper middle, straight to upper class. Where do the rich people who don't do anything fit in?

This all wreaks of fantasies of archaic cotillions.

I don't believe it's a smoke screen. Democrats trying to set people against each other based on race or gender? This is antithetical to liberal ideology. Companies, like oil companies, do get tax breaks. Why are we giving them tax breaks when they make huge profits? And we SHOULD tax the rich, and they SHOULD pay their fair share. Emphasis on FAIR. They should pay the same as the middle class. I am in support of tax breaks for the lower and lower middle class.
