I think that people thought that because when the ants come up to it the spend a while smelling it because it is new to them.

I had some serious problems last year with fire ants. I don't know what it is about me, but they ended up in my bed on two different occasions and on my couch once. My room is on the second story, so they had a ways to travel. They didn't end up in anyone else's bed or couch (and it wasn't due to food or anything like that). My dad ended up having to spray both inside and outside to prevent them from coming back in. I don't know right off what chemicals were used, but I can find out if you need them.

Did you get any recent plant orders? They could have hitched a ride.

At any rate that goo stuff works great, and I second ANT. Definetaly not a "carpenter ant"

Although these guys look like they just set up housekeeping in one of your pots - beware. Frequently, a large quantity of ants on / around plants can be an indication of an pest infestation. I know aphids and scale attract them (and maybe others) as there is some sort of mutually beneficial relationship between the 2 (pests secrete sweet fluid or something).

If you want to make up something, use small amounts of borax and sugar water (google for details). Borax has the toxicity of salt to people iirc but it's bad news for insects.

    Good luck.
    All the best,
