ok, i admit...

I am 12 and cannot ride a bike...
Or couldn't. Last night i finally got to riding and rode 4 miles around the buildings next door. I love biking

Congratulations. What kind of bike do you have and are there good places to ride? When my daughter was trying to learn to ride, she finally got tired of everybody's advice and went over to a neighbor's driveway and kept trying until she got it. Then she rode all over the neighborhood the rest of the evening.

Congratulations. :) If it makes you feel better, I'm older than you and I've never riden a two-wheeled bike in my life.

congrats! bikes are cool! :)

I have been through four major bike phases in my life.
your basic small "kids bike" with training wheels..
then upgraded to a "BMX Bike" in the 70's..
then my beloved Huffy 12 speed when I was teenager in the 80's..
that bike took me everywhere..(until I got a drivers license!)

then for the last 20 years or so I have been riding a basic mountain bike..although I seldom ride it on "mountain bike" type trails..mostly on the Erie Canal trail and local "rail trails"..

lately I have been considering diving into two totally alien bike concepts..
building my own recumbent from junk bike pieces:

(yes, thats a home-made bike, built from old road bikes!)

And I would LOVE to own a high-wheel 1880's "ordinary" :)
here is a photo of me at a Buffalo, NY bike museum, just last Saturday!

(unfortunately they didnt have one I could actually test-ride..oh well)

I might look for one..someday..and join the wheelmen:

of course, I also want a 1929 Ford Model A and a 1965 Mustang..
gotta have dreams! ;)

My mom had a 65 red hardtop, but she sold it before we moved to Virginia from Florida. Was a beautiful car.

I learned to drive in a 66 hardtop. I don't like Mustangs anymore, but I agree with you about the Model A. The author Farley Mowatt was right when he wrote that the Model A was the pinnacle of cars and that it's been downhill from there.

As for riding bikes, which is the topic of this here thread, I don't ride anymore because I don't like riding in traffic and live in a high traffic world now. But I walk ~30 miles per week to work and stores and so on.

its all about longboarding for me, but bikes are cool too. :) Nothing beats going downhill at insane speeds on a board...some of the down hill specialists go 60+ mph! :)

Hey Scott,

How do you get on/off that thing lol? :)

I've always wanted to get into longboarding. How do you slow down from speeds like that?

And I was wondering the same thing about getting on/off. lol

Hey Scott,

How do you get on/off that thing lol? :)

There is a little "step" on the "backbone"..you use that to get on and off..
I still havent actually ridden one! but would like to try it..
they were infamous for "headers"..if the front wheel hits a small obstruction, the rider can very easily flip right over onto the ground! this is actually the origin of "taking a header"..
this problem led to the creation of the "safety bicycle"..

Well, as i said, the building next door, there's a plaza next door, with all flat road except for a hill that connects all. I rode around the first building, and last night did a big lap around the first 2. It's a 21-speed mongoose.

... building my own recumbent from junk bike pieces:
I'm a big biking fan also. I try to get out every day but settle for 4-6 days / week. Building / buying a 'bent' remains on my forever todo list - I've just got to up the priority. You do know that there is a great bent shop in NY state an hour or 2 from you - right? I was looking into building something like this carbon-fiber machine. My wife & I built a wood touring kayak a few years back so I'm comfortable with fiberglass / epoxy construction & would love to do some rigid foam shaping and fiberglass building...

Seeing those wacky old bikes reminds me the "Minneapolis punk rock bike ride" is coming up. All sorts of freaks ride their weird/homemade bikes from Minneapolis to Mankato and back. Unicycles seem very popular in my dads neighborhood with the punks, I don't get how they can ride that down the street with a sack of grocerys and book bag! :D

Its called sliding or speed checking. Its the best way. You can also foot brake, but your shoes' soul will be eviserated, you can actually see the smoke sometimes lol! :)

Here, check out this video.
When the board goes sideways is when the slide is taking place. These are rather puny ones, sometimes racers slide for 40 ft. + and leave trails of urethane (wheels) behingd them!

Also, check these ones out! vid 1 (racing), this one (general awsomeness), this and this one!

oh and join silverfishlongboarding.com! :D
