For everyone interested in the mundane details I dug out the exif data:
aperture 4.5
shutterspeed 500
ISO speed 1600
exposure shutter prioroity
exposure metering was pattern
camera Pentax ist*DS
focal length 135mm (which on that camera really means 216mm)

I was standing on my upper deck and the birds were flying at close to eye level to me. BTW superbird is a female house finch.
I don't remember which lens i was using but it was handheld, manuel focus, no antishake
