Ok so im guessing there is a thread all ready but i figured if its not to personal of course,"Dont want to steal anyones Green Thumb Secretes" To start a thread where we can put down. I believe sharing this will help aid a lot of ?s Most people may have, just buy looking what others grow and under what conditions what work well or not.
-What setup we have.
-What Conditions....temp/humidit for,
HL
LL
Or any other CP

there are plenty-o-threads that deal with with this. each works for that grower's specific needs, so what works for one might not work for the other.

but here's mine:

t5 lights, two hygrometers on the ends of the tank, w/ two ultrasonic humidifiers---and a squirrel fan to top off. location is on a poorly insulated windowsill which allows for phenomenal temperature swings.

So come spring im going to top my my pots with spag to have a live layer how much do i need to put in to get it started and get what yours look like?

Well what are you growing? You're talking about planting for spring, but it also seems like you're asking about setting things up indoors. Up in your area you're probably going to need a sheltered location if you want grow temperate plants like flytraps or Sarracenia outside of the warm season. It takes a little extra work to get those plants through the winter that far north - but on the other hand your long summer days can grow some really impressive flytraps. If you're growing tropical species like Nepenthes or most Drosera, it's mostly a matter of shelf space. If your home is dry you might need a terrarium for finicky plants like Neps, but most Drosera and other common CPs are very forgiving as long as they receive good light and appropriate watering.
I suggest getting some of the big wire shelving units you see many people here using: like these here
And some four-foot shoplights. (Why four-foot lights? They're the kind that get used in offices and big buildings, so they're cheaper than smaller bulbs because they sell in bigger quantities.) T8 or T12 are both good - whichever you get go for the highest wattage available (40W on most T12s, I think... dunno about T8s.) If you can afford to invest in high output T5 fixtures, they're worth it in the long run, but kind of pricey for someone just starting out.
From there you can grow a lot of good stuff. If your air is too dry for some plants, there are various ways to set up a terrarium, but I'd suggest learning what you can do without one before going down that road.
Best luck,
~Joe

i already have a grwo rack greenhouse with a lot of plants i jsut like the look of the moss in the pots is all im going to harvest some when the snow melts jsut was wondering how thick to lay it for it to root well.

It's nothing fancy, but here is mine:

A lot of things are in baggies right now--there are a few pots of sundew seedlings, several pots with freshly sewn gemmae, and a number of new neps that are currently acclimating.

Temperatures are in the high seventies to low sixties. For light, I have dome clamp lamps with 26W daylight fluorescent bulbs hooked up to timers plus a little sunlight comes in through the window (trees block most of the sunlight, especially in the summer). Humidity is whatever it is in the room with a little boost from the sphagnum. Everything is stacked ghetto style on books and plastic bins. And that's pretty much it. Like I said; nothing fancy ;)

hey they dont seam to mind it at all they look great

Heres mine
So heres the new mini greenhouse i just picked up for 30$ at the local grocery store.

I have a total of 9 compact 25 watt 6500k florescents randomly as well as 3 24" 20 wat tubes both soft white and 6500k, a humidifier and fan......day temps 75-80 ish and night 60-65

This is my humble setup. It's pretty simple. Terrarium with three lights two of which are CFL and one that is a "plant bulb." I cover the whole thing with a plastic bag to keep in the humidity. I increase the humidity with my awesome Japanese mister.

DSCN5740.jpg

I like planting plants inside the sphagnum moss and I try to keep the bottom completely covered with live moss. I also planted some Utrics and a dew or two in there just for fun. Notice how I have a lot of the pots helter skelter on top of one another and such.... I'm not very organized at the moment. But as soon as the bicalcarata comes out I will do some major changes.

I'm lazy so here is a link, http://www.terraforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125189&page=2, to alot of pic's of some of my Vivariums.

As for harvesting moss, I would not do that, if you don't have moss growing already you probably don't have the conditions for it. If you have the conditions for it you will likely not want the moss :-O. I removed about 1/2 cup of various mosses every week. Die moss Die!

it was growing in my fish tank but i moved everything out of that and into the rack a month ago why not harvest? it will help hold moisture and allow me to be more leanient with watering.

I would not wish the curse of moss on anyone :-D.

There are only a few useful mosses in my opinion sphagnum moss for instance, the rest are pesky weeds. Now aquatic mosses are another story, so long as they stay underwater. Real java moss is nice since its sterile and won't seed everything. If you have a moss that produces a stalk, its not java.

A long time ago I thought "wow those moss covered pots look great" and introduced a few select ones into some tanks. Well there is no way to get them out...ever...completely dried out the tank, bleech, everything I could think of...and they came back nice and strong.

Nothing like a nice healty seedling or tiny plant getting overrun by a weed!

I'll stop my ranting or I could go on all day...

haha thanx i would only use spag. but if its more of a pain thanks for the tip. I do have one with some red tip sphag and i love how i looks, it is a starter plant so maybe ill just use it for my cuttings and little guys they seam to start better in it. once they get bigger i just not use it for the bigger pots

Here's the bulk of my collection housed on two 6 ft tall x 4 ft wide x 18" deep metal shelf racks. Each shelf has a twin tube T5 HO fixture over it.

Shelf #1
Top: female Vampire Crab / Black color phase Violin mantis / Vampire crab pair with their first brood of babies / Tan phase Violin Mantis. The tanks have mix of CPs, mosses, orchids & other tropicals
Middle: A. avicularia tarantula / CPs / all plant tank
Bottom: Neps / individual terrestrial Utric deathcubes / Orchidioides Utrics

shelf1.jpg

Shelf #2
Arboreal insects / an expired tank drying out before I restart it / 40 gallon cube which is just housing some terrariums for young mantids and so on.
Middle shelf: 40 gallon breeder tank housing my large breeding colony of Geosesarma sp. "Red" Vampire Crabs and my N. ampullaria collection
Lower shelf: Succulents / storage tub of small ferns / storage tub of small aroids and other small terrarium plants. Things are grown out in here and then pruned to plant the display tanks where they will either establish or fail but I still have a backup.

shelf2.jpg

In front of the window where it's a bit cooler I have a 20 gallon tank with mini orchids and my two HL Neps (N. jacquelinae & N. jamban). It's lit by side lighting from the two shelves & a 12" LED panel
mosssetup5.jpg

This is the LED panel I got off ebay for $35 w/ free postage, it's not anything wonderful hi-tech I guess it works. These orchids are kinda low light plants who turn yellow in bright light so I'm getting away with it.

Josh.. you've got money and talent that I don't!

Thanks but it really wasn't all that much $. The lighting fixtures & the metal shelves were the most expensive parts but I got them one or two pieces at a time since the start of 2010. But the vertical tanks are very cheap & easy to make, if I had bought similar sized premade front opening vivarums by Exo Terra or Zoomed I'd probly only still have just one or two. But I was able to make half a dozen 10 gallon verts for the price of a single premade viv and four 20 gallon verts for the price of a single premade one - that's the way to go!

Here's the DIY on modifying the 10 and 20 gallon tanks into verticals if you're feeling adventurous: http://www.terraforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123600
Super easy! :)

I guess I should take a pic of my grow area when I get home... may try to pursuade my dad to get me a few CFL's for growing neps in my room...
And in the spring, I may be making a mini-fridge into an UHL setup.
