    Huh...and it's not toxic?
Some days it just isn't worth chewing thru the restraints.

An all around benevolent crop!

I also like the effect it has on me. While coffee contains a cocktail of caffeine and muscle stimulant (hence the intense jitters you get after, say a pot or two... trust me I know...), yerba mate has a mix of caffeine and muscle relaxants. This gives you a nice alert but mellow feeling. Makes it a great study drug too!

I had never heard of the stuff before I took a trip to Argentina in late '09. Everyone around in Buenos Aires had these weird looking gourds with metal straws and they were passing them around like peace pipes. Then when I was in Iguazu, my friend and I hung out with this shop keep in a random souvenir store on a dirt road. He made us mate in his own gourd and taught us all the associated etiquette. I came back to the US with two kilos of his favorite brand and two gourds. The ritual of drinking mate is half the fun, too!
    Yes! +1

Can this plant be easily grown?
I honestly have not heard of it being grown as a houseplant or whatnot. My guess is that you would have to treat it like a Nepenthes.

I wonder--Do you have to drink it out of a gourd?
Well my metal straw has slits on the end so you don't actually suck up any of the thick infusion. And no, you don't have to drink it out of the gourd. I just found that it was cheap and highly usable with the bombilla (metal straw). Plus it's the traditional way to do it so I figured I'd see how tradition fared and I actually really enjoy drinking out of it!

It has no purpose just like a coffee mug has no purpose.

I've never heard of that happening before. I can definitely say that it's easier on your organs than coffee is.

Based on the wiki swords posted, it reduces the chances of some types of cancer while increasing the chance of getting others.

Concerns over the bladder and oral cancer is what kept me from going overboard with it. It's an interesting occasional treat but I don't drink it everyday or even weekly, hence how long it takes me to finish a bag. I do prefer Cameron's Kona Coffee more!
