Yup, we do it annually. The next upload is going to be a depressing one, just to give fair warning.

Here's the visit to the largest, scratch that, used to be the largest Sarracenia population in Virginia.

And now the depressing part. 60% of the purps on this site are now dead. Despite a clearly printed sign on the border of the bog reading "Sensative vegetation area. Do not spray." It was nuked anyways. Here's the damage. This bog is on a power line. SOmeone has some explaining to do.

We surveyed Avery's Mill Pond on 7-9-2011 in an attempt to find the mother population of Drosera intermedia in Surry County. We didn't find any, but we did find Utricularia radiata, which is a new county record. I found one of the flower floats while waiting for the team to get over a beaver dam in a canoe. It quickly lead to more and more of the plant the further we went towards the head of the pond.

Here's the pond.

Betty white ftw! I love her!

It's small and has a white top, why not name it after her? One of my friends got to meet her, making a lot of us very jealous.

I'm hoping to develop a hybrid or cultivar that has a red lid and tall stature so I can name it Conan O'Brian.

Nice shot of that jonesii.....I like it!!

  • #73
It's one of my favorite plants. I had to have one before the internship ended. It's an usually tall genotype, too, a little over 2 feet tall and a coppery red color before the first frost. The site where they're from is even more impressive, from what I've heard. It's definitely a species worth protecting.

  • #74
Awesome pics as always. Quite the gallery to go through.

That Jonesii is something else!

  • #75
I still have more photos to post. Thanks for the feedback! I have some print available on my DeviantArt account.

The one I brought home is working on a nice, tall pitcher. I'm looking forward to doing a giveaway of this plant in a few years.

Powhattan x leuco red is great!
Your friend got to meet Betty White? Now or when she was younger? I envy her so much.

She met her last year. So far we have 3 phenotypes of "Powhatan" x leuco "burgundy." One is this one, another is yellow with really dark veins, and the third one is all red.

Here's my least favorite thing in the plant beds, a giant water bug. This thing is about the size of my BlackBerry, and will make a grown man scream like a little girl with one bite. This is the molted shell.

Well, I am an art major, and won the senior award (for some wearable sculptures). It's hard not to make jonesii look good. The backlighting helps a lot.
