I took these photos today. First, we have my 18" pot, which desperately needs a repotting next spring.

I thought S. jonesii looked good this time of year.

And now for what some of you have been waiting for, the purp seedlings. Here's the oldest mature leaf on plant A

QB063232 by Wire Man, on Flickr

Here's the second oldest leaf of plant A. It has bolder veins.

QB063233 by Wire Man, on Flickr

And the third oldest leaf, the newest mature leaf.

QB063234 by Wire Man, on Flickr

QB063236 by Wire Man, on Flickr

Still plant A, the oldest mature leaf next to the newest.

QB063237 by Wire Man, on Flickr

The newest opened leaf.

QB063238 by Wire Man, on Flickr

The body is very different from the other leaves.

QB063239 by Wire Man, on Flickr

I liked this shot.

QB063247 by Wire Man, on Flickr

The oldest leaf. If this trait persists I want to call it S. purpurea "Papyrus"

QB063248 by Wire Man, on Flickr\

All but one of the leaves.

Cluster by Wire Man, on Flickr

Plant B, much more red on the body, which is very red.

Plant C

QB063242 by Wire Man, on Flickr

And some Drosera rotundifolia

QB063245 by Wire Man, on Flickr

This one is definitely a hybrid. Notice how much longer and skinnier the body is.

QB063246 by Wire Man, on Flickr

The whole 8" diameter pot.

Full by Wire Man, on Flickr

I moved a few to the terrarium to make room for the larger seedlings.

QB063251 by Wire Man, on Flickr

This one is very red right now.

QB063252 by Wire Man, on Flickr

No idea what caused this, but a very deformed N. x ventrata lid.

Deformed by Wire Man, on Flickr

Drosera roseanna, coming along nicely.

QB063254 by Wire Man, on Flickr

Fuzzy by Wire Man, on Flickr

N. maxima "Lake Poso" coming working on a new one, which looks to be working towards a more mature form.

QB063255 by Wire Man, on Flickr

D. burmannii seedlings

U. graminifolia exploded everywhere.

Some of my open pollenated S. flava seeds are germinating! New purp leaves should be opening soon, and the D. roseana are growing very quickly! I knew they grew fast, but not this fast!

I'm in heaven. Purp heaven..

  • #44
Awesome shots, dude! Everything's looking great.

  • #45
It seems like purps are getting even more popular on here. I'll have more photos soon.

  • #46
They've always been my favorite sarr. Funny thing is they are the only sarr we have here in Michigan, and I've never seen them in the wild.

  • #47
Same here...although seeing them in the wild is a totally different experience.

  • #48
I still got to go searching for some purps in NJ. Nice pics!

  • #49
Great pictures!

Thanks for sharing!!

You just have to know where to look to find them. Indicator species are key; Sphagnum moss being the biggest, sedges, orchids, Rhexia, Lycopodium, excessive amounts of pine trees, etc. There's just a certain look to pitcher plant bogs. Once you see it you can't forget it. If I ever make it up to Michigan and NJ I'll be sure to stop by and show you guys what I'm talking about. I've become a human metal detector for Sphagnum. Wild Sarracenia are.... I don't know how to describe it, but it's awe inspiring.

Here's a distribution map for Michigan.

And New Jersey
http://plants.usda.gov/java/county?state_name=New Jersey&statefips=34&symbol=SARRA
It should be easy for both of you, they're all over the place. Well, I don't remember their status in NJ, but Michigan still has about 90% of the bogs intact.

Keith, the maxima is a machine!!! It's putting on size fast, even if the pitchers take forever to inflate. The smilesii has taken well to Meadowview's greenhouse. I'll have to get photos of it next break.

I know of a couple places to look for them in NJ, just never actually went. I'll try to go next year.

More updates.

Sarracenia flava var. flava OP seeds germinating. These should be interesting.

N. burkei is a champ! It should be opening its first normal pitcher this month if I'm lucky.

Thanks! Glad you approve, Mike.

S. leucophylla turned very red when it entered dormancy.

QB243536 by Wire Man, on Flickr

As did purpurea.

N. maxima "Lake Poso" and its newest pitcher.

QB243539 by Wire Man, on Flickr

Lots of potential with this one.

QB243540 by Wire Man, on Flickr

N. burkei. This actually just opened a few days ago!

QB243542 by Wire Man, on Flickr

The next pitcher is looking a little devilish.

D. roseanna is really filling in.

Pygmies by Wire Man, on Flickr

And D. burmannii is getting a lot bigger.

Nice pics! The S purp is very beautiful.

  • #58
Thanks! That purp is actually from Lowe's, but still nice. I think you'll be happy to hear that we're going to try to get some purps from Chesterfield, VA into the hands of some other people to help save the genotype. The hood on this population is the most dramatic I've ever seen! We have a lot of seedlings that need some TLC.

  • #59
Nice babies you have there!

That purp is actually from Lowe's, but still nice.
I have quite a few Lowes plants that look great.
