Not gone, :-D but very busy and the plants are suffering, I'm still trying to hold on to as many as I can , but I may be making a move soon and have to down size , way down, I may be looking for some homes for a few neps and also a couple sarrs, and one of the terrariums. I'll try, in the next week to make a list of plants to go and anyone who is interested can message me.
I still so enjoy this forum, but am commuting for work 1 hour each way every day so it ends up being 11 to 14 hours a day , I am not the most ambitious person out there, it is taking its toll on me, and the plants. I'll probably only keep a few to take with me if things keep going so well with my new sweetie, don't want to scare them off with a room full of plants, they saw them here and their eyes popped out, and there was a gasp,:0o: It has been a year and they have gotten used to them, but I will still have to start slow.

LOLOLOL! Any one else been there , and if so how many plants do YOU have now?:-))

From another long commuter, amen brother! I'm strongly considering bringing a fair bit of my neps to work, although my situation is a little different since I teach in a biology department and we have some nice greenhouses at my disposal.

Grats on the new "sweetie" as well, and if they can't learn to love or at least tolerate the plants, who needs em :p

jimmy, good to see ya mate....

bummer on downsizing, but understandable.... i am trying to automate to reduce the current maintenance level of my plants. I have a long commute but mainly it was a case of burnout with waterings.

congrats and hollar if i can help

Butch

Good on ya :) Don't worry, hide 3/4 of the collection at work/someone else's house, and slowly sneak them back in over the course of a year or two into a fully enclosed grow tank so they can't see how much there is. They'll never notice til it's too late :mwahaha: and then you can claim the 3 "multiplied they grew so well for you".

What part of Virginia (zip code?)
I could hold your cold temperates like zu said :)

Good to see you again! It's a bummer about having to downsize. It happens to the best of us!

Your new sweetie should be able to deal with your plant problem if she is worth keeping. ;) Congrats!

You asked: "Has anyone else been there?"!
Of course! I would bet a lot of people have!
But it's not like a creepy porn collection, or poisonous bugs or something....
its cool & unusual plants!

When I first met my wife, she thought tomatoes grew on trees! ???
Her family never even had a plant in the house!
"You want to bring 'dirt' in the house?"!

But in meeting me, she got a big taste of plants of every kind! (As did her folks!)
And now she has a real appreciation for plants of all kinds!
Not quite into the hobby like I am, but she can appreciate & enjoy them,
that's for sure.

Indeed it takes time. And no matter what the hobby, a ton of "anything" can make your
significant other roll their eyes and wonder what the obsession is. :lac:
(Took my wife a couple years to understand that plants had a lot to offer, as did most living things, and that plants were a part of me & my life.)
As I began to accept & understand her hobbies & interests, so too did she for me.
It is a two way street, and while keeping things reasonable (there's a difference between say... a stamp collection; and a house full of stamps where one spends every moment and last dime on them! :0o:
Make sure to devote most your time to your Significant Other & let your hobby come in second place (so to speak) so they know where your priorities are, and they should have no problem with your interests. That is how it can be shared, and not be seen as competition.
In time they may enjoy the plants too, as you hopefully may for their hobbies also.
It would be wrong to expect someone to totally drop a hobby that is a part of them & their lives, and from which they derive so much enjoyment.
It is good to bend, but you have to also be who you are. And that includes your interests.

Good Luck! :water:

PS: Sorry to see you are making a large sacrifice. We all have so many plants at some point from which we could downsize & get rid of... but make sure you draw the line where you are comfortable. Why would your S.O. want you to get rid of something you love?
As far as not having the time, indeed as Butch mentioned, I also automated a few years ago, and now spend about a 1/2 hour or less per week on my plants... mostly to refill the reservoirs or check on things. Sometimes I don't see my plants for a few weeks, but then make up for it one weekend here or there to check on them, prune, be amazed at their growth, or notice something isn't doing well... or just to enjoy them. But indeed, it can be done. That's what timers & pumps are for!
Again, good luck!

I'm there. I commute 40min to 1.5hour one way every day (not including those fun days when there is an accident on the road and commute is 2 - 3 hours). Been doing it for a looong time and just recently acquired this hobby. My collection is small comparing to others but it is growing :). I don't have much time to tinker with plants but sometimes (like during this weekend for example) I stay up till 6am messing with them :)

But yeah, sometimes its not easy, and when you try to multitask you end up making a mess of things (that bucked of peat I left "leaching" in water for three weeks now probably smells like a dozen rotten eggs).

Oh so true!!! /me looks to the right at my significant other and whispers "that's why I do it during the night sometimes...."

P.S. GrowinOld, I'm writing you an answer via e-mail, sorry been busy this weekend :)

I am tired of sitting around in the background...

I have been preoccupied with other details, and what-have-you.

I am not much of a "Forum-er" and I don't go on the computer all the time either.

However, this doesn't mean I haven't learned the kind folks on this forum, and how
much friendliness they give and experience they share.

It is most certainly the least I can do.

You guys give back so much to the community and I suppose it is time I do too!

Long, long story short, I have built a greenhouse—or two. I certainly have the space for thousands of Sarracenia, as well as Nepenthes or any other plant.

I have no want, whatsoever, of anyones plants. I really want to help!

Rather than sell or give away your plants, let me take care of them!

I am just throwing it out there, that I have the space and utilities available for this
kind of commitment and I want to help out.

I am all the way in California, but if you do wish to accept my offer, you are more than welcome
to ship them off to me. (we can discuss this in greater detail) Let me know when you can take them back. The sooner the better, and for you, not me.

I promise that I would give them plenty of TLC.

I suppose one has to put trust into a complete stranger, but if you aren't interested,
I wholeheartedly understand. Certainly, it is strange for this kind of randomness.

But really, it isn't! I admire, I truly do, how much this community of growers takes
care of one another! I have never seen this amount of compassion in any other group of growers. Let me give back!

Send me a PM if interested, and if not, I understand that too.

I am sorry for the difficulties you are having, and I hope they eventually are resolved.
(And if you continue on longer, you might run into the withdrawal symptoms of this drug we call CP :)

Warm regards,

Jack

It belongs to the same family as the tomato, egg plant, nightshade and potato (solanaceae). Have not personally tasted the tree tomato though. Definitely an interesting plant.

Jimmy, glad to see your still around!!!

I’ve missed your plant posts. For a beginner you not only have a green thumb, but both arms and legs.
I understand your plight!!! I’m totally topped out on space and my electric bills are horrendous! I also have had to start giving away my plants. I recently sent a forum member ellisonk001 in Hawaii some of my extra plants. Keith is well known for his fantastic collection of plants and his generosity in giving away his extra plants.
Go ahead and sell or give away your Tequila(s) and I’ll send you another one when things cool down, my treat.

Bill
