It speaks to S. 'Adrian Slack's iconic beauty that it is still the poster boy for the genus, after all these years! (Surely 'Leah Wilkerson' is the "poster girl"?) And just think of all the Venus Flytraps in cultivation now. I'm sure they outnumber the plants still in the wild.

  • #171
You're going to want to use a MUCH larger pot for that Big Sister. The rhizome spreads like nothing I've ever seen before. And repotting/dividing most definitely sets the plant back in growth. Mine is just now starting to grow again from the divisions.

  • #172
I've moved some things around since that pic was taken. It's now in a much bigger pot with more appropriate media.

  • #173
I'm liking that pointy lidded alata.

I'm liking that pointy lidded alata.

That's actually just a combination of camera angle and the fact that they are newly opened pitchers. They look like completely normal alata in person. Too bad too....that picture does make them look really neat.

  • #175
I've seen some that do look like that when mature. S. alata is really, really variable and I confuse it with rubra sometimes....

  • #176
What's the more appropriate media of choice? I went with a sandy peat (plus orchid bark and charcoal) bog with a lower layer of water.
Back when I first set it up:

Yeah, rubra and alata are very closely related and certain forms and or locales of one species sometimes look very similiar to the other. After growing these plants for several years, alata has probably become my favorite species. Some it's darker or more heavily veined forms are spectacular.

The plant actually looks very similar to your pic now. It's second leaf is just starting to open. It's now in a 6"x6"x8" pot with a peat/sand/perlite mix and growing very quickly. I'm going to give it (along with my other epiphytic Utricularia) a winter cycle this year to hopefully induce some heavy flowering in the spring.

Great pictures, dude. Both sets. Didn't realize sarrs exhibited that squishing of the pitcher lid like some of the lowii hybrids. Than again, I don't know much about them in general.

Seems to respond well to ferts, just FYI.
