So, I had another thread that I put pics of my plants in, but I didn't like the thread title and didn't know how to change the thread title, thus the new thread. Anyway, here's some newer pics of SOME of my plants, with more to come. Hope all can enjoy
Richard

Trying U. gibba in my fish tank. So far so good. Those are zebra danios in the bottom right, if anyone cares to know. Nothing fancy as far as fish go.

Very nice. I need to pick up a N. mikei one of these days.

Loving that ceph.. wish I could get my LL's to look that nice.

Loving that ceph.. wish I could get my LL's to look that nice.

Thanks :)

I have them in a hot, steamy terrarium with the lights on at night instead of the daytime to avoid temp. drops. My main issue is what to do when they outgrow the terrarium...Cut them back I guess. I have a seven or so inch wide N bicalcarata (seen in the background of one of the pics), it deffinately won't fit in there for long :/

I'd be more than happy to take that ceph off your hands for ya! ;)

Nice collection!

The Ceph is not a space issue, obviously. Not looking to get rid of it. But would you be interested in one of the pitcher cuttings, assuming one of them takes (I took two cuttings)? That could be arranged :)

That amp looks wonderful....you just helped in convincing myself I need to try one!

Your maxima grew incredibly fast!!! It's good to see an update from you. If the danios breed the Utric will keep the fry in check, possibly. They may be too big for the traps.

  • #14
I've read of some Utrics as groundcover, but never thought of floating ones to put in an(my) aquarium. What's the hardness in ppm of your aquarium water?
Nice ceph, especially the pronounced M's on their lids. First time I see a N. khasiana, and I find their pitcher rather elegant. Definitely your plants and fish are well taken care of.

Thanks for all the compliments:)

I was really surprized that soon after getting the maxima it started bolting and producing uppers. Deffinately a pleasant surprise :) U. gibba traps are pretty small, so I don't foresee them eating the fish fry. Then again, I don't know how big the fry are. They would have to be really small to be eaten.

Well, my aquarium is recent enough that I'll still need to see how the U. gibba does. We'll see. I put the aquarium together at the end of December/begining of January. I've actually used Reverse osmosis water from my filter for the aquarium and then added the recomended dosage of aquarium salt (1 tablespoon/5 gallons) for the sake of the fish. I don't know that this is the best, or necessary (using R.O. filtered water). Still trying to get a feel for the best aquarium upkeep. I just didn't want to deal with all the anti-chlorine agents, etc I would need to use (?) with tap water.

The gibba has had a bit of trouble with fish nibbling at the growing tips and some algae growth on it. I'm pretty sure I need to change out the water a bit more frequently to help avaiod that. I don't know the ppm, but I can test that and get back to you.
Any thoughts/suggestions to a new aquarium keeper?

I got the idea for putting gibba in there because a few years ago at a pet shop I saw some gibba in their fish tanks as a tag along plant with the typical aquatic plants.

Wow! Great looking plants.. The binata are cool.

The spectabilis is going to be exciting! Such a nice contrast between the body coloration and flecks. It looks like N. ramispina will start making more mature pitchers right about now. I can see the spur becoming more pronounced. It looks more mature then my N. burkei, by a lot. I want that thing to make adult pitchers ASAP!

I still laugh every time I think about the dried milk.

If the danios don't work with acidic water I have a whole list of things that will. Both of my nano tanks have a pH close to 5. Of course, as soon as I put some Utrics in the 3 gallon tank the filter pump stops working.....
I think you'd like wild form Bettas. they look and behave completely differently from the typical pet shop betta; much shorter fins, less aggressive (you can keep a pair or breeding group together without recreating the Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and their behavior is really interesting. The Coccina complex is the most interesting, I think. I have no clue how hard they would be to find in Utah, but they're really rare over here. Small gouramis would work well, too. I have a licorice gourami that prefers a pH of 4...... crazy little thing. The zebra danios should be fine in a pH of 6.0, they're hardy little things.

Yeah, I'm excited about the spectabilis. Good luck with the burkei!
I'm thinking of getting a couple dwarf gourami's, and that will be it for my aquarium for now, but I'll deffinately keep that in mind for future fish. Besides the danios, I also have a male swordtail that my sister gave me and a few "ghost shrimp" which are doing well.
