Thought I posted these. . . I guess not!

This is really similar to a picture I posted a while back in this thread. Just different lighting and lens!

Again taken with the helios.

I had the Vivitar 28mm Close Focus Wide Angle out yesterday.

I generally only use it for close focus/macro shots. I was pleasantly surprised by this one.

One of my fav lenses.... easy to focus, min distance is sweet, very nice color
I like the first and last the best.... :)

Here is another vintage wide angle... Yashica ML 24mm f/2.8

yaz24mm_weed.jpg

Everything is various shades of gray and brown outside at the moment.... ugh

New addition to the collection..

Arrived yesterday, "Super Multicoated Takumar" 50mm f/1.4
This is a 1971 mfg. lens... known for excellent performance and being slightly radioactive (contains Thorium in the glass).
The glue is also slightly reactive and causes the lens to yellow if not exposed to UV light occasionally.
(easily reversable)
Ive put it under a UV light for a few days, it has a hint of the yellowing

But first I couldn't resist walking out on the front porch and snapping a quick pic... no comp, just making sure it worked..

Lots of potential, the in-focus area seems to really pop

Whats something to read or watch to learn to take great pics? I have Photography For Dummies but they use really big words???.

  • #167
LOL, ummm if i had that answer my pics wouldnt be so bad....

To be honest I do the shotgun approach... I take a dozen pics and usually out of that I get one or two I think look nice.
My best advice, get a camera that has manual mode and just start taking pics...

the really good people (amp takes beautiful studio type shots) know how to use lighting.... im still a babbling baby in that area
But for that read a blog called the strobist.... amazing, but ya gotta get some basic equipment to do their assignments

Im learning though, here is crop from one I recently took with my vintage Jupiter 9

If you look carefully in her eyes, you can see I used two lighting sources... in what is callend the rembrant config.
The key light is a soft box to the right of the camera at about a 45 degree angle to the model and an umbrealla as a fill light just to left of the camera.
The fill light was on about 1/8th power and the key light was on about 1/2 power.
Exposure was set using a 18% gray target
(a very textbook setup/shot )

Ha! I think your pics look great. Your heli pics are some of my fav online. Everyone in this thread seems to know what theyre doing way more than I do. Guess i'll have to play around with manual mode some more. Thanks!

Aperture priorit mode is my fav I guess.... you control the depth of field and *Bokeh with it,
then the camera selects exposure time to match....

sometimes you have to do a little compensation, but its a good place to start.

Here is a good camera simulator that will help demostrate the effects of aperture/iso (film speed) and exposure time
http://camerasim.com/camera-simulator/

* Lens design is a major factor in Bokeh as well....

Thanks Butch. The descriptions at the bottom helped a lot. Now I actually know what the buttons on my cam do:p.

Not quite a cult lens but using the 50 mm minolta macro on my nikon. Guessing lens is 20+ years old. Not a Number suggested an adapter to use the minolta equipment I have on the new nikon. Forces me to do a lot on manual adjustments. Was trying extreme selective focus :)

Wow! Love that flower Kula. I don't think I've ever seen that Sarr before.

I had the SMC Tak 50mm f1.4 out yesterday. I think these turned out pretty decent.

Some kind of weed in the yard that I think is pretty. It's always one of the first to bloom.

A neat looking one that I forgot.

I didn't like this one sized down so please click the link HERE

Thanks for the ID on the plant and on the insect guys. That was unfortunately the only photo that I took of the insect Kula. It does look a bit like a click beetle.

It's really nice glass, I think I'll get some extension tubes to try with it. Wanna get that nice bokeh in macro!

Thanks for looking!

IMHO the Helios are the biggest bang for the buck in vintage glass, Soviet or otherwise...

Classic prewar Zeiss design... and built like a Soviet T-34 tank!

Beautiful Bokeh, color, and sharpness... all for under 100USD

Excellent pics Gabriel. it's a hard lens to put down once you start using it!
