Pine Barrens trip #2

Heli

villosaholic
Today I visited a couple of locations with my grandfather. First we did some canoeing through the pine barrens.

We discovered a small opening in the dense forest, it was mainly a field of cranberrys with small pools of water lilies.

There were a couple drosera intermedia scattered on the pool banks.

Now for the next location. I have been to this location once before and involves a bit of offload driving to get there, this secret location was shown to me by one of the Brooklyn botanical garden curators.

WOW!!!

snake might be a hognose.

The colonies of beliziana are breathtaking.

WOW

thank you everyone. I still have a ton more photos to post :).

I just wanted to note that all the red in the last three photos is drosera. The beliziana population was located in bronze sphagnum so anything that looks like red sphagnum is actually just more sundews

Those plants look great! Looks like fun :)

There can be an overlap in the S purpurea, but most of what I always see on my trips is S. purpurea subsp. venosa

Ok thank you. This location is in the southern area of New Jersey so you are probably correct.

Just went through the pictures on the other camera. Most of the pictures were blurry so I am just posting the good ones (which happen to be only of beliziana)

Gorgeous plants, that x beleziana swarm is really cool. I knew they had a tendency to sprout from leaves, but that is just ridiculous.
Also pebes: that is a banded water snake, it looks nothing like a hognose.

VERY cool Heli!
You are very fortunate to experience such wonderful places as you have.
Very nice!

Always refreshing to see these plants in situ. Thanks for sharing, Heli.

Cool pics.... The snake is indeed a water snake. Not a hognose.

'Nice, Heli. 'Such a hotbed for cps.

Waoh, you must take me there!

Did you see the Jersey Devil when you were there?

  • #17
bandeds aren't supposed to be further north or east than north carolina, probably a norther watersnake, but i suppose it could be a banded. pretty sure i saw the jersey devil in one of the pics
