Random pics from the last while

Hey everyone,

I've been away for a while because of school and travel and other stuff, the plants are still alive, but they don't look particularly exceptional, so I figured I'd post some pics from the last while.

I'll start off with some pics from the Pittsburgh zoo:

And that's about all, hopefully my plants will start looking a little better so I can share some pics of those!

Thanks for looking!

Gabriel

You think you're an inept photographer?? I think you're inept at giving yourself credit, 'cause those are some GREAT pictures!

It is not the story that makes the picture, but the picture that makes the story. At least I always thought so.

Leave everything and become a wildlife photographer or filmmaker. You'll change the world.

Nice cowfish photo! And Hadfield!

Exceptional photographs Gabriel!

Love all of them but you have captured the gorillas expressions a treat .superb

Love the frogfish. Saw a baby one of those scuba diving in Kona in February. Neat stuff!

Thanks everyone!

@PlantPlanter: Thanks! That's my old username, feels good to finally be growing out of it!

@ToG: I've thought of it, but I'm slow, so my world changing would probably be interrupted by a hungry photographic subject...

@Wire: Oh! Thanks for telling me what it was called! And yes, Hadfield is the hero that Canada both needs and deserves, we treat him as royalty up here..

@Amp, Drew, and Corky, Thanks!

@incspir: Ohh, scuba diving, that'll be something I'll be raring to get into once I get my underwater case!

And a couple more pictures:

Finally made it to a Dark Sky Preserve in Southern Ontario and was able to hone my astrophotography skills without the interference of city lights. I also got a couple of Perseids and quite a few satellites in some of the shots. They're all 30 second exposures at ISO 3200:

It was a tad cloudy, so the large reddish patches with no stars are passing clouds.

This one has a really nice meteor in it:

This one has a satellite and a blinky little airplane:

Only one satellite in this one:

There's a few more images in the full set:

I also managed to find a nice little praying mantis yesterday, the photos are a bit odd, but I think they look nice:

I also spotted this Eastern Garter Snake killing and eating a Northern Leopard Frog yesterday, unfortunately by the time I got to my camera it had already basically finish, but I got a nice shot of it with the foot of the frog sticking out of it's mouth:

And to finish off, a little green frog:

As some of you may know, I recently moved to Guelph to attend university (BSc, Zoology), and I've been trying to find nice places around the city to practice my "talents"...

I'm waiting on clear skies to let me see how the stars are here, so I decided to go out and walk around for a bit.

I did end up finding a nice patch of Goldenrod bustling with insects, so I busted out the 40mm macro and the Strobe and tried to take some shots of the wasps/hoverflies:

Anyone have an idea of what this guy could be?

I also spotted a small Eastern Cottontail and proceeded to ninja crawl through the mud in order to get closer:

Quite impressive shots Gabe! I love the hoverfly with its iridescent wings.
You must have some pretty decent camera equipment too ;)

Thanks everyone!

@Richjam; yeah, pretty much! Behind every good photographer there's a good camera!

Very nicely done, Gabriel! Some great stuff there.

Thanks Paul!

I finally had clear skies last night, so I went out to an area of campus with no visible outdoor lights. The light pollution is still pretty bad, but with some luck, I should be able to image Andromeda and the Orion Nebula when the seasons are right. For now, I pointed my camera at the sky to test some new software.

I recently installed a program called Deep Sky Stacker on my computer. It uses multiple images of the same area of the sky, analyzes the stars, and stacks them, this allows the noise of the image to be reduced, and increases the visibility of stars that aren't very bright.

Caph, 300mm, 2sec, iso3200, 20 lights, 10 darks:

Caph, 300mm by Ineptphotographer, on Flickr

Various constellations, 18mm, 10sec, iso1600, 10 lights, 4 darks:

Cygnus, Lacerta, Pegasus, ect. 18mm by Ineptphotographer, on Flickr

Lights= Actual exposures
Darks= Exposures with the lens caps on, used to reduce noise from ISO

Deep Sky Stacker:

Post processing done with Adobe Lightroom, I used http://nova.astrometry.net/ to determine the names of the stars I had captured.
