I was wondering what was up with all the Sarracenia paraphernalia from Newfoundland, and Google tells me it's the official flower of the province.
I think the artist's imagination may have gotten away from them a bit with the piscivorous Utricularia, the other bladder containing the mosquito larvae is a bit more accurate........ Interesting print none the less.

S.purpurea purpurea is indeed the official flower of Newfoundland and Labrador. It's image is even minted on some of their mid century pennies between the years 1938 and 1947.

I used to have one of those pennies when I was a kid.
I also collected the set of North American Wildflower cards that came in packages of Brook Bond Tea when I was a pre-teen. The Roger Peterson illustration of Sarracenia purpurea on one of those cards was my first encounter with an insectivorous plant, and so I had to find one to see it for myself. As it turns out, the species grew in the region and I had no difficulty finding plants in situ!

Roger T. Peterson's illustration of S. purpurea here.

If you're looking for antique botanical prints, you should check out Brimfield http://www.brimfieldshow.com/ . There are TONS of vendors there and many of them have old prints for very cheap. I picked up the majority of mine there over the years for only a few dollars each. It's already over for May but, there's still July and September.
