If it's in an unused (and well away) area of the yard (that's what it sounded like from what you wrote), I'd just leave them alone. They'll die in winter.

I see no reason to kill them or destroy their home untill they start war, as I love to watch their
Nest buidling and watch how they work.
My yard is filled with yellow jackets every year, (average of 3-4 nests) and
They never really bother anyone, but ive never had bald faces.

The guys pictured below are some sort of semi agressive wasp that love nesting
In my porch light. Last year they would divebomb at your face if you got too close,
But this year its almost like theyre not even there. Secretly hiding

    Judy,
There are companies that will come to your home and collect and remove those fellas for you, free of charge. They collect wasps and hornets for their venom which gets used for a variety of purposes, inuding important medical applications.
You should find out who does this in your area. It's a win-win proposal.

I did say win/win, Fred - not win/win/win (Though if Hornets are altruistic creatures, then its a win for them too, by donating their bodies to science!)

At the moment the plan is to wait until winter. If I can find a group as Whim suggested I will give them a call. But from what I have read, baldies prey on yellow jackets, which is a win for me.

That would explain why the one in my yard was chasing every other insect that got close to it.
