The ball was clearly in the stands, Moises Alou's glove was over the wall, once the ball is in the stands the fans may catch it if they want. Anybody sitting there would've tried to catch it, it is unfortunate that he didn't catch it, but that's just the way it goes.

Fans are part of the game, they always have been and they always will be. It would be a whole different story if the fan was reaching over the wall for the ball, then it probably would've been called an out.

Let's hope the Cubs win tonight! Should be a great game

Well my personal opinion on this is if there is any chance for the player to make a play on the ball.. get the H*** out of the way!!! Players catch balls in the stands all the time and if the make the catch it is still an out. I have seen countless times where some bonehead fan interferes with a play and significantly swings the momentum of a game. Weather or not the play last night was a catalyst for that I dont know, seems to me that if the Marlins scored 8 times in that inning then there was more going wrong for the Cubbies than 1 interference play (possibly ragarm pitching??) So is it wrong for the fan to try to make that catch? YES. Is it his fault the Cubs lost? Absolutely not.

I may think it was interfence, but we must remember a couple of things.

1. Fans are part of the game and it happens. Well said.
2. The crowd reaction was WRONG. A lot of them would have tried for it. The media reaction is even worse.
3. It may not have mattered if the Cubs had been in the game in the first place. Hey, they lost like champs..phew. But I still love them.
4. I only want to cry because some horrible gang of pretenders has abducted the fine players known as the Cubs. Help! Reward offered!

Okay Cubs, pull it together.

Well, its an emmotional game, and the kid, IMHO, made a bad SPLIT SECOND decesion. He sees a ball coming and wants a trophey, just like everyone else. Yes, the catch would have been easily made if he didn't get in the way.
I am not happy with the media at all though. They have blown this whole thing up. Posting this poor guys face everywhere. I bet money this guy will be harrassed to no ends if the cubs lose again, and thats just wrong. Things like this can ruin people.

Angry

I didn't know that fans get to play in the games? I thought the athletes play the game and we go watch and cheer. How else do you think the crowd would react if someone made a bad decision, that at the time, could have lead to a loss in the playoffs? Actually, I think this whole thing is funny. Gives me something to laugh about, just like the whole thing of Old Man Yankee getting taken to the ground by Pedro.

True, athletes play the game, but fan involvment also plays a part. There would be no game if not for the fans. But that is not what matters.

I am a Cub Fan, I always have been. I will be upset if they lose, but I will not back crucifying this man. Tell him was wrong, be mad, but not this. The media could have even talked about the "idiot" that caught the ball, but they put out information about him. Where he worked, probably where he lives. He will be marked for years. His family will be affected, his job. This is a little carried away. I work with with the darker portion of society on a daily basis. I can almost guarantee that if the Cubs do not go on this man will be vandalized and harassed if not worse.

Also, a young man knocking down a 72 year old just is not my idea of humor. I mean no insult to anyone. It is just my opinion. (Zimmer will always be old man Cub to me )

I am with you Casper.

Looks to me like he wasn't the only one wanting that ball. The guys to his left in that photo link Casper posted, look like they're hoping it'll bounce their way and have their hands ready to grab if it does. I think whoever posted this guy's photo and all his other info showed a poorer sense of judgement than Bartman. His was a split second decision, the journalist(s) had plenty of time to consider their decision and still made the wrong choice.
