Is anyone familiar with a cheap digital camera that happens to take decent pictures?

Owen, if you plan on taking close-ups of plants, look into maybe a lower end used model of a sony? You can find lotsa good stuff on ebay. Just do your homework first so you don't get ripped off.

I am a personal fan of the Nikon series..

I would suggest going with a middle of the road right now, around 3 megapixelz, 4 and 5 are still hellaciously expensive.

Also, Ebay is a great great idea.

I use a Nikon Coolpix 990. I bought it on Ebay for a good price and it takes good enough pictures for me But then I've always been a fan of Nikon so maybe I'm biased..
