Just a comment on whether he was nailed through the hands or the wrists. Obviously, we don't have extremely accurate written records from the Roman era, but we do have some accounts. There were two ways the Romans crucified, one with a nail through the wrist, the other with a nail through the palm, but with the arms tied to the cross with a rope. This supported the weight of the victim so that the nails did not pull through.

All in all, the movie was pretty good. There was some Hollywood added in and a few Catholic beliefs (Mel Gibson is Catholic), but overall it was a good representation in my view. I recommend everyone go see it, it's quite moving.

I am yet to see it. Think it should be good...just hope they do not have subtitles through out the movie.

just wanted to poke my head and say something.

Everyone is free to discuss this movie, and their beliefs here. but let's not let this discussion deteriorate into a brawl like it has in countless other forums ok?

personal opinions (not as admin).

The movie portrays a story, who tells the story influences the story. In an interview, Mel Gibson said to be anti-semitic is to be un-christian, our imperitave is to love, not hate. Unfortunately, for many that is not what happens. Irregardless, the movie follows scripture closely, it is telling a very old story, and as far as I know, far more accurately than ever before in the medium of film.
\"Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: \"Mankind\". Basically, it\'s made up of two separate words - \"mank\" and \"ind\". What do these words mean ? It\'s a mystery, and that\'s why so is mankind.\" ~ Jack Handey

A brawl? I have been here for about a month but i do not beleive anyone here would participate in one. They are all kind and helpfull people that i have met.

As for me, i have already stated my opinion and it does not bother me what people think of it.

I might want to clarify on what i ment about the anti-semitic thing. Do i think its a problem? Frankly... no i dont think its a problem. Everyone interperts information in diferent ways so a very small group perhaps... but for the vast majority i don't beleive its a problem.
that makes no logic

OK, I hesitate to touch this one, but as Finch points out, this is about the most level-headed, good-hearted group of people on the internet. I read a critique of the movie that pointed out several discrepencies with Scripture. They are as follows, and I invite any of my more well-versed (so to speak) forum friends to comment. Keep in mind the critic in this case found the movie to be overyly violent:

-- Satan in the Garden of Gethsemane? Where does that come from? It's not in any of the Gospels. Anne Emmerich, perhaps?

-- Jewish soldiers? As far as I know, the Romans permitted no such thing. The Gospels, notably Matthew, Mark and Luke, largely describe a gang of men, some of them from the high priest's office, who arrest Jesus. John's account mentions soldiers, but the clear implication was that these were Roman soldiers supporting the arrest.

-- The excessive brutality begins a mere 15 minutes into the film, when the Jewish soldiers who arrest Jesus wrap him in chains and throw him over the side of a bridge. Again, this appears nowhere in the Gospels.

-- It continues throughout. Violence is committed upon Jesus in nearly every scene, with any number of beatings for which there is no scriptural account. The Gospels, for instance, only mention that Jesus is beaten at the end of his ordeal before the high priests; but Gibson has him beaten throughout.

-- At every possible point, Gibson ratchets up the level of violence to nearly pornographic levels. When Jesus is flogged by the Romans, they don't merely whip him with the traditional lash. They get out torture instruments that are designed to dig in and gouge out chunks of flesh, which they proceed to do. One particularly memorable shot shows the meat flying out of his ribs. Later we are treated to a view of the exposed rib bones and surrounding meat. Again, there is simply no Scriptural basis for any of this, nor really any sound historical basis for it either.

-- He depicts Pontius Pilate as vaguely sympathetic, a waffler who is ultimately mere putty in the hands of the Jewish priests. In reality, Pilate was ruthless, a notorious suppressor of uprisings who never flinched at inflicting "Roman mercy." In a more common reading of the Gospels, though, it is likely that his motives all along were cynical manipulation.

-- Satan appears -- conspicuously associated with the Jewish priests -- throughout the film, lurking in the background.

-- The film places the scourging of Jesus (to which we are given the full 20-minute treatment, a la Braveheart,) after his first appearance before Pilate, but before he has been condemned to be crucified. This is not the sequence given in any of the four Gospels.
---------------

Now, as a maker of computer games that include violence, I cannot pass judgement on the film based on this. I don't share the sensitivity to graphic scenes that many do. However, I'm concerned that the deviation from scripture is such that there is just a hint of anti-semitism.

People should know where that is coming from, too. Mel Gibson's father, who Mel credits with teaching about religion, is a lunatic. He's a vicious anti-semite who is also a holocaust denier. I don't think Mel Gibson thinks these things, and has never uttered the sorts of words his father has, but that's why people are nervous about it. Mel has never criticized his father for these things either.

All in all, it's a fascinating subject, and I applaud Mel Gibson for making a personal statement wth the film, and for not caving in to critics, even though I'm at the opposite end of the political and religious spectrum from him. I'm all for honest unfiltered personal expression, and also recognize that his film-making and production values are top notch. I will go see the movie, but not until the hype (and crowds) diminish a bit.

Travis,
There are subtitles throughout,I thought this would bother me as well, but so much of the movie is visual. In fact, after the first five minutes I don't even remember looking at the subtitles.Just a tip, don't waste your money on popcorn!
I ALWAYS get popcorn and a drink and they may last me 10 Min. into the movie.
I didnt get any popcorn this time, but I did get a drink.I walked out of the theater with my cup 70% full.I will admit I was able to get to my car before I completely lost it.I just sat there for 10 min. or so sobing.I'm so gratefull that we have a loving Creator. As a parent it just ripped my heart out.In fact it still does.

On a trivial note:

The character who played the Savior, his ACTUAL initials are J.C. and he was 33 yrs old! Another, is that during the whipping scene he was actually whipped twice on accident and experienced very first hand a minute portion of the pain Christ went through.

I just hope the world will celebrate more the victory of Christ of life over death. His resurrection the capstone of the Atonement is the focus of our church. I probably won't go and see the movie, because if someone tortured and murdered my best friend and even had video tape of the whole thing. It would NEVER intrigue me to go and watch that tape. It would be too heart breaking for me.

But, I applaud Mel Gibson for speaking up in a quickly depleting Religious Moral society. He was a voice of Faith and Love where most are creating shows and films that strictly applaud works of evil. As violent as it was, I know Gibson was being honest and more than likely hated the violence himself. He is just waking the world to the reality of His Savior.

The scourging did take place after Jesus was brought back from Herods to Pilate the second time.To be God and man I should think come with inhearant knowledge of good and evil,so no, there is no biblical account of satan in the garden but I do believe he was there every step of the way.Pilate was potrayed as a little to kind for my taste ,but regardless of his disposition, I should think anyone would have trouble punnishing an innocent man. It's stated
that even his superiors could find no fault in Jesus.2 cents
