Uconn amorphophallus titan

Hey everyone - I just saw this notice from Matt at the UCONN Greenhouses in Storrs, Connecticut:

The pseudo-carnivorous plant Amorphophallus titanum is going to be blooming at the University of Connecticut (Storrs, Ct, USA) sometime around June 30th, a first for the New England area. You can keep up to date at the UConn Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Conservatory website:

http://florawww.eeb.uconn.edu/Titanum/Titanum2004.html

The EEB Conservatory also has a fair number of actual carnivorous plants on display, including what are probably the only Roridula dentata plants at a public greenhouse in the US.

-Matt

I hope some folks in the area will be able to check it out!

I wish I was close enough to go. I would love to see one of those in flower.:p

Wow that's great! I'd really love to see and smell the infamous corpse flower in bloom!  I have a 3" tall  A. titanum (with a second growing point coming up!) but it'll be quite some time before I have any flowers.

An Amorphophallus bloomed at my local landscape arboretum last year but I didn't hear about it until after the fact. I don't know what species they have, the article only said "a giant horrible smelling flower called devils tongue". So it may have been A. konjac as I see that nickname used a lot for that species.

If you go please post some pics for us!

I just checked that link-cool they have a webcam with update pics every 12 seconds!

I like this statement they put above the webcam image:
"Tip: If there's people in front of the plant - don't bother yelling at your computer - they can't hear you. We'll try to move them along as best as we can...."

Any NECPS members heading up to Storrs to see this monstrosity?

Nice job on the illustration, Matt!!

As Nathan said on the other post, the website is being hammered!!

Here are some quotes from a news story:

"At the University of Wisconsin at Madison, a titan arum bloomed in 2001, and 30,000 people came to see it, some from surrounding states, said Mohammad Mehdi Fayyaz, director of the university's botany department greenhouses and botanical garden.

At the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, an estimated 800 people an hour viewed a titan arum in bloom last year. At Wisconsin, the bloom was shown on a webcam that produced so many hits worldwide, the university computer system crashed."

Maybe that's why the site is down!!

Wow, I feel blessed now. I just saw the one that bloomed at Marie Selby.

It's been difficult to get on the site. Here's some links that were on the UCONN site to a funny pic:

I noticed the links at the bottom of the page...there is one for VA Tech. They have one and flowered it in 2002. Lots of nice photos on their website of it.

I've been checking the web cam whenever I can (when it's up) & the flower seems to be behaving strangely.  That's what the notes on the growth chart says.  Has anyone been there to see it in real?
One shot of the web cam I caught was one guy bent over with his nose right in the half-opened flower.  Either it wasn't yet smelling or maybe his nose wasn't working or maybe he just likes the smell of rotting cadavers.

It looks like the inflorescence is still closed.  It won't start to stink until the "flower" opens.  Can't wait!

Cool, I see more Amorphophallus in leaf to the left of the one flowering!
