Thumbs down

I am getting 4 orchids from my friend in France, but when she went to the post office and told them that they were live orchids going to England, the ppl refused to post it because:

1)They dont handle fragile things

2) They dont ship live orchids, or other vegatble products without a phytosanitary certificate

3) If my friend is to do this, she needs to provide a phytosanitary certificate as well as ship extra-expensive chrono post, taking shipping cost for these 4 orchids up to the 100 euro mark.

This is simply ridicilous and outrageous, the law says it is completely legal to send orchids to England! It also says no certificates or permits are needed!
They are being complete jerks!
So if you want to send a box of carrots to England, you would have to pay 100 euros! They think a bit high of themselves!
aI am very angry, and so is my friend!

Dino,
Slow down there, buddy. I very well may be that you need those certificates. International shipping of live matter is very strickly regulated. No one wants possible pests or contagens getting spread about.

Its not what the official law says! It says that you dont need any permits to ship stuff to the EU, but America is a different matter. You dont need those certificates, thats why I am angry! They tried to make my freind pay out on something unnecesarry and very costly. My friend is an orchid specialist, and she knows all about the law and the permits. And you dont need one to ship from France to England. They just want her money, and lots of it!
And they say that for all plants, so you need to pay 100 euros to send carrots from France to England! That is so not on!

No certificate is needed for shipping within the EU as far as I know.

The whole EU thing is still kinda new and there are still problems with the system. Off the top of my head I don't know how the CITES and Phytosanitary laws were changed when dealing between countries that are part of the EU agreement. It doesn't surprise me though that not everyone is up on possible changes. If it is true that you no longer need CITES and/or Phyto certificates then that information should be available and only a matter of bringing copies to the postal folks for them to review.

The issue of handling live material etc is another matter and they can set their own policies. Here in the US the Postal service regulations vary for each country on what they will/are allowed to transport.

Screaming how lousy they are and how angry you are isn't going to resolve the situation however.

Of course is true that you dont need permits, it says it in the law.
As soon as the word 'orchid' or the word 'plant' or the word 'England' come into context, they refuse to ship it!

Well, there is no use complaining.... just bring the law or exempt of saying you need no permit printed to the post office as proof...
