A friend who's with the USFS was searching for some GPS documentation and stumbled upon the website of the Degree Confluence Project. *Basically, people use GPS to put themselves on the intersection of a degree of longitude and a degree of latitude. *Then they take some photos and send them to the website.
My pessimistic side wants to know why some people can travel the globe with GPS while others don't have a safe supply of drinking water. *My optimistic side had me checking to see if any nearby points haven't been visited yet.
