I got to thinking... that's usually deadly for me. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone from the Milwaukee WI area would be in a position to come down to Kenosha and speak to Jr. High kids about Carnivorous Plants to nurture and encourage their interest in CPs?

I realize this is a tall order. The kids are very good kids and they would be respectful of anone who came to share with them.

I know I have sent seed to someone in Milwaukee WI, but I can't remember who. Another option would be to email Dr. Barry Rice of the ICPS who often requests someone from the listserve in the area to respond if interested in helping. The ICPS is very big on promoting education regarding CP in general, and I am sure Barry would be delighted to make the appeal for you. Considering the rather poor ettiquette shown to newbies there in the past, this might be your best resource to meet your goal. If I were closer I would love to speak to the class. The truth is, I am a far better writer than I am a public speaker, and I am very shy. Believe it or not.

I have not considered the opportunities available by dealing directly with the school system, and your interest has sparked an interest on my part as well. I think the idea of a guest speaker and a take home pack of CP media and seed to grow would be a great thing. If I had a video camera I would offer to tape a presentation, write up a handout on the care requirements and history of the plant, and make up some grow packets. Sort of a CD CP Instructional, lol.

In the meantime, I hope you can find a speaker. Inspiring good plant stewards is a noble work in my estimation. Old guys like me aren't going to be here forever, and we need replacements. Thats why newbie growers are so very much needed. Growers come and go, but newbies are the ones who will keep the ball rolling long after the old school has graduated to the big bog in the sky.

Hi sarracenia, you are at least a 3.5 hour drive from Kenosha Wisconsin. You're up in Marinette by Menominee, correct? I know that area well and have been shopping at Angelli's for years on the way up to visit family and friends for holidays and such. I'm originally from just a little bit north of you toward Escanaba. Gosh how I miss being there. You are very lucky, the people are so wonderful and down to earth.

Hi TamlinD, Barry is the man who sent me a list of plants indigenous to my area. I don't have his e-mail address any longer as I saved the plant names to my hard drive. Sweet man. Let me see if anyone shows up here at Terra forums from that area first before I contact him. If I send you a video camera, would you be able to get somebody to tape you? That would be really awesome to pass around through the schools in the Diocese.

I've been poking around today looking for age appropriate sites for the kids. I had to pass out candy to trick or treaters so I had a lot of time on my hands between door bell rings. In addition to the ICPS sites http://www.carnivorousplants.org/ and http://www.sarracenia.com/faq.html , I found three that I like-

    http://schoolweb.missouri.edu/monitea....bQ.html

    http://www.botany.org/newsite....nts.php

    http://www.***************/about-carnivorous-plants.html

I also found a teacher background site that provides an overview-

    http://www.state.nj.us/pinelands/pinecur/tcp78.htm

I am still out there looking for sites. I did order the book written by Peter D'Amato for them.

Just posting so maybe somebody from the Milwakee Wisconsin or maybe even the Chicago Illinois area will see this who might be in a position to visit some kids. I spoke with the teacher this morning and she is very much interested in a speaker to talk to the kids about CPs.

Thank you Dino, I know you are sincere as you are a fine young man. If you are interested in coming to the US, we would be more than happy to extend an invitation to you, accompanied by one of your parents, to stay with us in our home. We have extra bedrooms and bathrooms and it would truly be no trouble at all. We had friends from the UK for a month over this past summer. They had a blast horseback riding, shooting BB guns, shopping at the big Gurnee Mills Mall, as well as fishing from a canoe down at the pond for some reason. I don't particularly like to fish.

Does anyone know how to get a hold of Dr. Barry Rice. I had his e-mail address when he sent me a list of native plants but deleted it after I saved his information to my hard drive. I think I would like to pursue getting someone to talk to the kids as the teacher expressed such a sincere desire and was really excited that there might be a possibility of someone coming.
