Unhappy

All around the country are schools called Cyber Charter Schools. I am currently enrolled in the Pennsylvania one called Pennsylvania Learners Online (PALO) and it's really cool. I've been in the school for 2 years and I plan on returning next year. All the work is done through a school system known as Blackboard where teachers post work and links to online textbooks to use. Work is set up as a weekly thing. Every Monday work is posted, it is the students' job to complete that work before the following Monday unless otherwise noted by a teacher. I, for one, LOVE this system. I can do all of my work on Monday and be done for the rest of the week. But what I do is do a subject a day which only takes 1-2 hours versus the SEVEN HOUR SCHOOL DAY of public schools. Some people don't agree with these systems and are set on getting rid of these schools. Since that will most likely never happen I don't really care but they don't understand that for some kids, public school is pure burning HELL. Most of you know what I'm talking about and hear about school shootings and kids bringing guns to school and things like that. These schools help prevent it, they do nothing but good for the kids that hate Public School. It's also good for the kids that get expelled from public schools and have nowhere else to go. That way, they aren't causing trouble in a different school every year. So what are all of your thoughts on it?

Ayo Hellz here,
i think its kinda cheap, no offense,
the Homework would be kinda e z, namean? (hint: cut and Paste)
the test, you can cheat SOOOO EZ
and the whole "school experience is pretty much abolished
and things like Phys. ed and those classes where you get physical are pretty much abolished,
and anyways, nomatter if you are enrolled in school or not, your parents pay the same taxes (and if im not mistaken, the more kids you have in school, the less a tax you pay, i think)
anyway, normal schooling (public school that you actually go to to learn) arent that bad, and the programs they provide (like clubs and sports and stuff) are really good, and should be taken advantage of (I love golf club, free driving range days, and free rounds of golf are awsome ^^)
just my thoughts,
Hellz

Public school is pure burning hell... but I'm not sure if escaping the experience is a good thing or not. What comes after school can often be much worse, and I wonder if being even less prepared for that is in a student's best interest in the long run. You could consider it Harsh Reality 101.

Though at the same time, I probably would have gotten much better grades and cared much more about what I was learning if I'd done it your way.

Cyberschools are great for self-starters -- those who have the motivation to do the required work, and to even go beyond what is required. However, the cyberschool work must be supplemented with activities that allow the student to socialize with others who are around the same age because it makes for a more well-rounded person. The home school movement has realized that, so many home schooling parents have arranged for their children to have regular activities with other home schoolers. Some cyberschools have their students meet once a week or so. Socialization can also happen through organized sports, such as soccer.

I believe that devoting a couple of hours a day to cyberschool work is equivalent to an entire day at a traditional school. Most of the day at a traditional school is taken up by non-learning activities, such as lunch, recess, changing classes, teachers having to calm students down after they change classes, and disciplining students. One study showed that teachers in one particular school district spend more than half of class time disciplining their students! So when it comes down to it, students at a traditional school might have only a couple of hours of actual instruction anyway.

ChronoKiento, it seems like you are making good use of cyberschool. You are saving a lot of time by not attending a traditional school. I hope you are mature enough to make good use of this invaluable resource.

I knew I shouldn't have posted this thread because none of you understand except for endparenthesis and Tropics. If you are caught "copy pasting" then you are expelled no ifs ands or buts you're out. With Phys Ed. you have to have a log of physical activity every week with so many hours of physical activity on it. If you cheat on that then it's your own darn fault if you get overweight. It is NOT that easy to cheat on tests either plus, the teachers will know if you're doing horribly on one thing and doing 100% on another. There are certain signs that tell you. And about the social skills thing, I'm online all the time TALKING and either way I'd rather skip out on a few social skills that i won't learn because my school district is full of total A-HOLES that would rather talk to walls than to me, rather than commiting SUICIDE or shooting the crap out of my school which is some alternatives that people feel they are FORCED to make! In my eyes, the whole "school experience" royally sucks anyway. They always say, highschool is only for SOME people and Cyber school is only for SOME people other people will like things that others don't, that's life. But it's nice to actually escape from HELL and feel some nice cool wind for once don't you think?!

Also, I AM mature enough to take on the responsibilities of the school even though sometimes I don't act it, but I am, if you don't believe me then I can show you my report card. As for social activities as of now I'd rather stay away from people in real life because I can't handle it. I know almost nothing but bad things from people my age. Sorry for getting angry but this kind of thing really ticks me off I didn't think I'd get this sort of response.

GUNS AT PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THE U.S.A?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!
OMG that never happens here!!!

Well I agree that some public schools are hell........not the learning, the bullying and teasing.
But I can never learn anything sat at a computer or learning from textbooks or worksheets at home, I tried it for 2 months and it was.......boring as hell, and I learned very little. I need someone to explain it to me in words first.
Also I agree with JustlikeAPill. You may get curriculum at home, but you get no socialising with other kids(except for via messenger) but no face to face conversations, and in teenage years, socialising is very important, esspecially with the opposite gender. You dont get social skills either, schools teach this.
Sitting at home doesnt teach you any social skills.

What would be a much better option is if you move to a much smaller, private school, where the kids are pleasant, a-holes dont get into private schools because private schools only choose students who are nice and willing to learn. It certanly worked for me.
