I've got a question.

These here numbers-->375144E and 3010557N

were on file on my computer. I and a few other suspect them to be GPS coordinates. However, they have an uneven number of figures(6 and 7...I was told that they should have the same number).

The question I'm asking is if anyone is able to figure if this is correct...and if it is then where this would place you(should put you somewhere in FL)...and how to convert it to a different format(degree/min/sec or decimal degrees).

This is obviously way out of my grasp but if anyone here happens to know I would be very grateful.

I'll look for you. give me a few mins.

Dude, if they are coordinates, it's somewhere in Jordan.

LOL Exactly what I was thinking. I think it is something to deal with the constant again as the person who I've been talking with said.

"We don't like Westing and Southing in our coordinates as that means we have to work with negative numbers...so after addiong the constant Westing becomes Easting and Southing Northing"

Actually in any format the easting westing should have one more digit then northing/southing.

With out any decimals or seperators it is just a guessing game as to what format they are in now.

* = degree for lack of a degree key on the keyboard

DMS format is

N/S xx* xx' xx.xx"
W/E xxx* xx' xx.xx"

DD format is

N/S xx.xxxxxx
W/E xxx.xxxxxx

Degree Minute format is

N/S xx* xx.xxx'
W/E xxx* xx.xxx'

A coordinate is a coordinate. Westing and southing only cause problems when working with bearings. And if it was a bearing it would be in a format such as:

N 22* 14' 36" E
or
S 67* 23" 56" W
etc.

So does this work?

37.51.44N and 30.10.576 W

I think that'll be in the Atlantic Ocean

Yep, off the coast of Spain.

Well you switched the N and W and if a computer program generated them, it would have to read from right to left to bring it back in, so ending decimal places would need to be equal, otherwise there is no way that the data could be brought back in, and get the same data it exported..

3.75.144 E and 30.10.557 N
or
0.37.5144 E and 3.01.0557 N

But best guess would be that it is DD format so it could be:

3.75144 E and 30.10557 N
or
0.375144 E and 3.010557 N

Ozzy: What are you using to generate these?

30.438N
and 84.281W

This one should be Tallahassee.

Also(providing its valid).

is this the correct way to write the earlier one?

37.51.44W and 30.10.576N

Hmm, not really. If you are going for DMS it would be.

W 37* 51' 44" and N 30* 10' 57.6"

Thanks guys!

Elgecko: Which one are you referring to?

This one-> W 37* 51' 44" and N 30* 10' 57.6"(or the other way around...)

Should be somewhere in Sarasota County.

If You use the original numbers and E as a DD with 5 decimal places on each it puts you in algeria

Sarasota area would be like:
N27.336644 W82.53077
