Darla swears by HP, my laptop is a Dell, i havent had any problems with it. for desk top i would get a HP, for a laptop it would be a toss up between HP and Dell depending on what features and how much you want to spend.

I've had an IBM since 2000. It has never failed in any respect and I can hook up most of the fancy new stuff to it without problems. Not a popular brand, but in my experience, fairly inexpensive and dependable nonetheless.

This was posted on the CPUK forum recently (thanks Mike) - thought it was relevant here:

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way
computers have enhanced our lives, read on.

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the
computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up
with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving
$25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon"

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release
stating:

If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving
cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part):

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to
buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You
could have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the
windows, shut off the car, restart it, and then reopen the windows
before you could continue For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a manoeuvre such as a left turn would cause
your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would
have to reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable,
five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only
five percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all
be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation"
warning light.

7. Before deploying, the airbag system would ask, "Are you sure?"

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out
and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door
handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced, the car buyer would have to
learn how to drive all over again, because none of the controls would
operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn off the engine.
Please share this with your friends who love - but sometimes hate -their
computer!

I had a technical support problem with Dell that was so traumatic and unpleasant that even now, three or so years later, I still cannot talk about it.

My dad has 2 dells and has had HDD problems with both. One was a desk top and one was a lap top. He now had an HP Laptop too. I had an Emachine and every drive has went out in it except the HDD and the motherboard has went out two times. I have built my computer now and working fine. Compacs are junk to IMO they HATE AOL. Something about them. I wouldnt own another. If you have a computer now and don't plan on using it I would look into building one. I just built mine for less than 500. I used the HDD and memory and CPU out of my POS Emachine. Oh and bought a new copy of XP pro off ebay for 100. Its not hard to build, but you have to be into that thing and do some reseach if you never have upgraded or anything before. As I mentioned before my dad was a dell man till he started having a TON of problems with both of his. He liked his ne HP. Personaly I would build because you can replace parts that go bad instead of having to buy a proprietary part from say dell or HP or compac. If the Motherboard goes bad you have to replace with their motherboard. So I hear anyways.

If you build or buy a brand I would recomend not getting a celeron. There is nothing wrong with celerons they are just terribly slow compaired to their P4 counterparts. This also goes for Semprons compaired to Athlons. Although if speed is not an issue to you then they are a cheap alternative.

Well...the first part is true. The second part sucks. Apple can't help it if so many people got the false impression quantity = quality.
