    My Bog

This is pics of my bog that I took last month. A lot of the plants in it were bought right here at Flytrapshop.com

This is a S. catesbaei from Andrew. They look way better now that they are fully open. I'll get some more current pics soon.

This is a S.dana's delight flower. It's currently the tallest thing in my bog at 28 inches.

    S.ladies in waiting.

    The filiformis

The D.filiformis on the left will be auctioned off on in the NASC auction. When I planted them last month they were about a 1/4 inch tall. Now they are over 12 inches.

The S.Dixie lace in the background will be auctioned off too.

    D.dichotoma "Red Dwarf"

    D.dichotoma "giant"

    D.intermedia (Brunswick Co. NC)

    D.burmanni Beerwah, QLD

This is S. flava var. rugelii from Andrew.

Here's a VFT that i got from Walmart.

The rest of the pics are of the vft's I rescued last year.

To show the size of the trap, that is a common house fly in the trap.

Those are some big flytraps! I think I'm cursed when it comes to VFT's.
    I regret little to nothing!

It always impresses me when someone can keep a bog with sundews and butterworts in it. Regardless of how "easy" a sundew or butterwort species is, they are just way more fragile when grown outdoors. Squirrels can dig them up, they can get buried in muck after a hard rain, they can get crowded out by overly vigorous sarracenia, etc.

You live by the NC coast, right? Are D. capensis and mexican pings hardy there?
Have you tried growing D.rotundifolia, or does it get too hot?

Great looking bog, this has got to be my new favorite!
I love how natural you let it look by letting all of the grass and other non cp plants/weeds grow in there, it's like a sclice of the real thing. In the close ups as if I'm looking at a picture of the plants in their natural habitat.
It looks very well established, how long have you had it?

The best way to grow vft's is to put them outside and let them take care of themselves, at least it is for me.

Slurm, I don't see the difference in growing them in a bog and them growing in the wild. They have to face all of those challenges in the wild. I'm lucky so far that no animals have destroyed anything. I noticed the other day that my D.burmanni had about 10 baby plants shooting up around it. We had a very hard rain on Sunday and all of them, except the parent plant was gone. I dug a little to find them but I didn't see them. They will probably shoot back up soon. I currently only have one ping, P. moctezumae X "Kohres". If it rains hard it'll not look it's best, but new leaves grow right back. In the wild they have grass that protect them from extreme weather. I'm working on getting that in my bog.

As far as the capensis and mexican ping being hardy here, all I can say is they survived last winter. This was the first winter I grew them in my bog. I'm sure the capensis will survive here with no problem.
Yes I live in the most southern part of NC, 1 mile from the ocean. I've never tried D.rotundifolia, send me some and I'll let you know how they do. lol.

I love how natural you let it look by letting all of the grass and other non cp plants/weeds grow in there, it's like a sclice of the real thing.
In a way it is a slice of the real thing. There was a site that was being dug up to run some utilities right through a vft colony. I scraped up the top layer of soil and then planted it in my bog. I wanted to preserve the whole site, not just the vft's. I also thought I would have a much higher survival rate that way. The grasses should help insulate the plants from temperature extremes.

It looks very well established, how long have you had it?
    I built it last summer.

Thanks for all the compliments. Here are a few pics I took today.

Ok now's the time to send the little ones out of the room. I got pics of a vft being very naughty.
