If you're moving to the mainland you should check with the US Department of Agriculture about shipping your plants. They may be confiscated if they don't meet restrictions. Basically live plants in soil is a no-no and certain species or types of fruits are not allowed to leave.

    See:
    http://www.aphis.usda.gov/lpa/pubs/f...ice_hawaii.pdf

and/or call the USDA, APHIS, Plant Protection and Quarantine office at:

    Kailua–Kona: (808) 326–1252
    Hilo: (808) 933–6931
Grand Hotel... always the same. People come, people go. Nothing ever happens.

The reason your house probably isn't selling is because it's either overpriced or in a bad neighborhood (some of the biggest 2 reasons why houses don't sell, I would assume).

Man even if you're in the ghetto in Hawaii, you'd still be in Hawaii!

I guess, but from what he/she described it doesn't sound as good as I would have thought. I mean, bad neighbors would suck. And no friends, even worse.

I've lived in Hawaii. My parents and grand parents are all from Hawaii. It can get old fast. My mom always used to say "It's a nice place to visit but you wouldn't want to live there."

There isn't a whole lot to do especially on the outer islands. Drug usage among school childern and teenagers is a big problem. There's not much economic opportunities and not much money to go around, even less so since all the sugar cane and pineapple crops have moved to Haitti etc. Since Japan's economy took a dump the tourist industry took one also.

Moving property on the north shore of the Big Island is a tough sell because people all want to live around Kona. Even so the property values are probably too high for the locals to afford.

It's a paradise with many drawbacks.

Welcome! This is my favorite CP forum out of all the ones I have visited. Sorry to hear about your troubles selling your house. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
