What tree do I have in my backyard?

Hey guys,

I hope you can help me out here. We recently moved to our new place and I have this tree in the backyard with a slim white-ish trunk and jagged edge leaves. I think it might be a type of Birch?

Please enlighten me. Will this tree shed its leaves in the fall?

Here's a pic:

Your right, it's a paperbark birch, and yes it will loose all it's leaves this fall. Since you just moved in I'd look into getting a bit of malathion for next spring and paint an inch band around the trunk. Bronze Birch Bore will make this a shortlived tree (7-10 yrs) vs alot longer, unless you zap them every spring. Look like a nice yard too !

Thanks Chris. Ok Malathion is some kind of pesticide against the birch borer right? Any particular brand of pesticide to use?

Ok I take the malathion comment back, it's an old method and probably not safe around children in the yard. Too many years of greenhouse spraying makes my mind go katty wumpus sometimes !!! Contact your local extentsion office for specific details in your area for treatment. However, I was able to find a reference somewhere that imidacloprid works great and can be used for your CP's too. I think it was someone on the CPUK that has tried this with no ill effects on their plants. Look in your local LOWES or the like for a BAYER product with imidacloprid as the active ingredient. Follow the label directions and you should be good to go.

The Bayer Advanced product Droseraguy is talking about comes in a blue bottle and it will say contains Merit.  There are several different variations of there product.  I use the one for rose and flower without fertilizer on my orchids and CPs.  There is a Tree and shrub version, but they all have the same active ingredient in them.  Merit, that is just the trade name for imidacloprid.  Also the same thing is in fronline for dogs and cats too.  LOL  Its a great product and I love it!  Just DO NOT try to use it for a mite infestation.  It is NOT a mitacide.  Some people have described it as Viagra for mites, since it will kill all the mites natural preditors leaving the mites to have a field day.

im intriguied by the "will it shed it leaves in the fall?" question..

are there decidious trees that do *not* shed their trees in the fall?
if you are far enough south? or in parts of California?

I never heard of such a thing!
but im not from a warm climate..

Scot
