SubRosa's "Hopefully This Keeps Somebody Happy For At Least a Little While" thread

I really don't like posting too many pics because my plant growing skills far exceed my photography skills, and I'm no Luther Burbank, be certain of that! I can think of several people here whose growing skills so far exceed mine that I wouldn't feel worthy of holding their hoses. And one of them can be a real pita about wanting to see pictures. Yeah buddy, you know who you are! Figured I'd start with some really shiny ones to keep you busy a while. L to R, top to bottom,#1Tritonia duesta, #2My poor Geissorhiza radians,#3Hesperantha baurii,#4Geissorhiza monanthos,#5Dactylopsis digitata,#6Lilium catesbaei, propagated from scales.#7 Heliamphora hetrodoxa x minor:

And here we have a very rare and valuable picture. It shows without a doubt the luckiest cat, if not creature in all the world? How else can I categorize a 5 lb cat that ingested 22 out of 23 Dendrobium subuliferum seedlings in a 5 gal terrarium and survived? I doubt many full grown humans could handle that dosage! *

And in gratitude for past and current generosity, (alata x minor) x flava rubricorpa #1. This is current growth under leds. Last year's spring pitchers were solid red, so I can't wait to get this outside:*

Good looking plants. How long did it take for your lily scales to show growth?

  • #10
It was quite a while, at least 2 months before new growth appeared. And that was a scale with a healthy leaf. The second scale with no leaf took almost a month longer to start, but seems to have made up most of the ground between them.*

Thanks! I just took a bunch of them and was curious how long I had to wait. Looks like I have a while lol.

Fwiw I have two pots of 3 each, each pot containing a different clone. One pot gave 2 out of 3, second pot has nothing.

  • #13
So they have a low strike rate. I took 5 or 6 of each variety so hopefully something survives.

Well, it's about time John ! Aside from the cat damage, the Geissorhiza radians actually looks pretty good. That swelling at the base indicates an impending flower.

Need to get some pollen for a bit of diversity!*

  • #16
Well if that fails, they're self fertile. Just gotta tease em a little.

  • #17
Or I could get some pollen from my monanthos if they flower. Or maybe one of the Hesperanthas.........:poke:

  • #18
I know where you're going, settle down........ I'll send you some pollen. Jeebus........

Are Geissorhiza and Hesperantha closely related enough to cross ?

  • #19
I don't know, but seeing as how one is winter growing and the other summer, figuring out the cultural requirements of a hybrid could prove interesting!*

A pic of my bog bonsai. The mother plant this came off of grew in 4" of soggy lfs suspended over 6" of water:
