Mine grow fine in a mix of peat moss, shredded pine needles, perlite, silica sand and let the rain water them, in dappled sunlight underneath a scotch pine tree and I've had 2 of them bloom so far in 2 years.

Cool you have got one more year to be considered successfull by the big slipper heads. Is your silica sand the fine play sand or the course stuff? I;m trying to find out if the play sand I bought is ok or if its too fine. The bag says its 100% silica sand.

I wouldn't use playpit sand. It could have all manner of other minerals mixed in it. You could swish it in some water and take the pH. If it's acidic then might be ok. An alkaline reaction is a no-no for the plant.

It's probably too soon to know. He'll have an idea when he sees what grows this year, but the extent of their happiness won't be known until he sees what grows in 2008. That species can grow very slowly and it can also die very slowly. But he's also in a place where they'll experience their greatest stress in early summer and they haven't experienced that yet.
