    Rescuing Orchids From Lowes Clearance

About a week ago I purchased 4 Dendrobium orchids from the clearance shelf along with 2 African Violets. They were in perfect health and even had a few new flower buds forming. They were large plants, and were only $7, so I purchased them all. Everyone in line at the register pretty much thought I was crazy, but buying them was better than letting Lowes throw them away. It is a shame that such beautiful and healthy plants would be abandoned and disposed of without the help of other humans. It would actually be a good idea to purchase them on clearance as long as they are healthy Obviously Lowes cant make them re bloom, so all they can do is get rid of them, but if a collector takes them in and gives them proper conditions they will almost definitely re bloom and put out vigorous growth. I would encourage you to purchase these plants when you see them like this. Has anyone else tried this?

I LOVE Lowe's "Dead Plant Sale". I bought my first orchid from there for $4. I didn't know anything about orchids and figured if it died it's worth it for the pot. But It didn't die and it even made flowers for me. Here's how it was when I got it.

Woops, just realized I don't have an updated photo. I'll upload it later tonight. It made two tiny purple flowers. Oh wait you can see it in this photo.

It's the one under the thermometer. All those orchids I got from Lowe's. I've been tempted to get more but wasn't sure since they seemed common. Although my local one has cut back on its dead plant sale. I haven't seen any. Sadly they may just be throwing out the plants as soon as they loose their flowers which would totally suck.

My mother in law and I have bought a ton of these orchids. I made friends with the sales specialist in the gardening dept and got about 8 of them for $0.25 each. Just take my word and inspect them closely, and quarantine them when you get them home. I had a mealy bug infestation on all my plants shortly after bringing them home. They are sometimes loaded with pests.

Thanks guys. I'd love to make friends with whomever places the orders for such an opportunity. That one is the only orchid I haven't changed the substrate on yet because it's flowering. They all come in LFS only. All my others are Paphs.

Just got back from Lowe's. Been wanting a yellow orchid for a while so when I saw this one in the dead plant sale I took it.

Can she bring it back? by Thagirion3, on Flickr

Yes it's in terrible shape but I figured it would have a better chance with me than out in the sun. Plus it would be a challenge to fix it. It had like no soil and again for $5 I figured it's worth the two pots it comes with if it dies. But I'm giong to do my best to fix it. I took it out, cut off the flowers since it doesn't need to be putting energy into flowers, washed it, cut off the rotted roots, and repotted it into orchid bark and perlite. Gave it a little liquid fertilizer and put it under a T8 with cool white blubs. I think that's all I can do and hope for the best unless someone has any other suggestions. If it recovers I'll post the progress.
