I'll let Noah address the S. rosea flap, but DNA studies show a strong genetic difference between S. purpurea ssp. venosa var. burkii and the other S. purpurea.

See the article by Noah Elhardt on S. rosea in the NASC newsletter.

Refer also to Barry Rice's thoughts on S. rosea.
Grand Hotel... always the same. People come, people go. Nothing ever happens.

Admit it, it's a different plant. Notice the flower stalks are short. And the flowers look like roses. And "rosea" is one heck of a lot easier to say than "purpurea ssp. venosa var. burkii". Just rolls right off the tongue!

Nope. Whoop-di-do it's got pink flowers with a short stem and an "overdeveloped" peristome. I refuse to call it that for now

And S. alabamensis and jonesii are just types of rubra. They don't deserve their own species status, IMO.

Ahh well, we'll agree to disagree with that

OMG!! I love that leucophyllia....its sooo much better than the red veined variety. I want to really see if I can buy a leucophyllia with white veins...that would be perfect. This is the best sarr in my opinion.

Here's my S. purpurea var Burkei breaking dormancy, with a VFT Red Piranha in the background. That's a true color pic. What a red!
