Growing Cephalotus follicularis on a Vertical Wall?

  • #61
Lights/temps/+?

I know lighting and temps are factors, I'm just thinking there is more to it.

Maybe pH and humidity of the substrate?

Or maybe mineral concentration of iron, magnesium or aluminum in the substrate?

Or maybe pH has an influence on availability of certain minerals in the substrate and it is the combination of pH and minerals?

I think we have a lot of things to examine before finding out.

Coloration of Cephalotus seen on pictures in the Internet may also be influenced by Photoshop, I think.

I've never considered pH, but I'll add it the list. I probably have a large difference in pH between those two mediums. Guess I should start looking for a soil pH tester.

Yes, photoshop is a problem.

A few more pitchers, and they are getting bigger!

Little bit larger. Another good example for the "I hate moss" photo's.

The Cryptocoryne parva is finally starting to creep its way up the hill.

Here is the whole thing, with the white wall behind it the colors are off a bit. I'm too lazy to move it out.

wow.. that thing grew quite a bit in just a year's time. What kind of lighting is it getting?

amazing, I really love the way the moss covers everything. And of course, the slopes are awesome too. :-D

Yeah, that's really cool. Anything in there besides the Cephs and Crypts? Looks like prime Utric terrirory.

EDIT: I see a pygmy, too. D. enodes?

EDITEDIT: Maybe I should re-read things before asking questions. >.< Anything but the pygmies, Cephs, and Crypts? LOL.

I attempted doing this myself after seeing the first parts of it. It was a complete fail though, the growth point died and then re-grew... but now it's only making immature pitchers.

hope you don't mind me posting. :)

Just those 3, now there is tons of random stuff popping up I can't keep at bay.

Don't mind at all, that will look really nice when it grows in.

I'm not sure what made the first one grow so fast, maybe the deeper medium on the slope.

Wow that's a nice setup. And the moss has spread nicely accross the soil.

That is very nice, i'm growing my ceph sometime alike to this, will post pics soon, i just have to remove tags since it is not allowed to put tags, which comes with the name of the store in here, that keeps me sadly from posting in TF :(
But anyway, great idea! :)

And here it is my ceph growing in a hill with the top in silica sand, the rest is silica sand and peat from below that thin line of silica sand.

Hopefully tomorrow I can post up some updated pics.

I do have some sad news, a few months back (I still don't know how) but something go into the water I use for watering and I lost 3 Ceph's, the water clearly had a salty smell to it and I've taken measures to hopefully stop that from ever happening again. Anyway the large Ceph died before I even knew there was a problem, for reasons unknown the smaller one is still doing fine. I believe this death was caused by the water and not the set-up. The other 2 Ceph's died at the same time. All 3 Ceph's were in different tanks, mediums, and light levels. I'm just happy the rest didn't go with them.

During this time some riccia got in there somehow and I learned emersed growth riccia is very attractive :-D. So I will be using it in other projects.

I'll be replacing that one when I get another small typical Ceph ready.
