My lord. Those plants are amazing.

  • #244
Yes, they are!! :) I think that growing plants from seed, is the best way to enjoy that passion!!

PS my photos are too big??

Last year's seedlings survived their cross country move and first winter with close to no losses.

Even a handful of Darlingtonia are still kicking, for now at least.

And the next generation is getting started.

And plenty of developing pods for 2014.

Is there a secret to success with S. alabamensis and S. oreophila? I have tried two packets each of ICPS seed and not a single one grew.

I can't speak for alabamensis, but for my oreophila seed, I stratified for 6 weeks, then I let them germinate in extremely hot, humid, bright conditions (I put them in a terrarium where I grow some of my neps that's conveniently also right next to a big window) and let them germinate on pure, chopped sphagnum. I got germination within a week. I find that the higher temperature in my terrariums tends to help me a bit with my germination rates and the speed which they sprout. Mine are still quite just beginning to pop up but I have had pretty decent germination rates so far. I haven't really noticed any extra difficulties with them though, and that's how I germinated all my seed the past few years, so you may just have received some dud seeds...

Sounds like how I handled them, and it worked well for all my other species and crosses. I guess I'll just get more and try again.

...tarnok x eva...
...tarnok x flava...

What?????? I read online that since Sarracenia leucopylla "Tarnok" has double flowers, you can't pollinate them. Apparently, this is inaccurate? If so, I'd love to make some seeds.

Here is my biggest seedling at the moment (well that I grew from the very beginning, I have some others that are bigger that I did not sow myself)!

Hooray! Bigger than a Q-tip! This is an ((alata x leuco) x flava rubricorpora) x flava rubricorpora that I received from Fred P in 2012.
