Sarracenia from Seed!!

  • #281
Did you get it from me hcarlton?

  • #282
To tell you the truth, I rarely remember who I trade with for what. It probably was from you, though.

Hey guys I just set up my first *ever* batch of sarr seeds and want to hear what you think. I used the method noted here. I put the seeds in the fridge with finely chopped sphagnum (which I painstakingly chopped with scissors) about a month ago. I then set it up in a seed starting kit that I picked up from home depot.

It says that the mini pots are peat-based. Seem legit?

How do you cross Sarracenia leucophylla 'Tarnok' with anything? Do you just get lucky and the flower has one anther or pistil instead of being all petals and tepals?

Tarnok just doesn't produce pollen, but is fertile.. It can have 4 to 8 stigma on the sepals/petals. It's the easiest flower to pollinate I think. The problem is that overy is mutant too and, sometime, it can happen that a very good pollination, results in few seeds, but all depends on your luck :)

I have really enjoyed looking at the various stages of growth from the photos in this thread.

Question...once the seedlings crowd the pot and need to be thinned and planted out into individual pots, are the roots all entangled with each other? How do you separate the individual plants? Do you lose some to the transplanting process?

That's what I'm worried about with my Drosera capensis and my (newly divided) Venus flytrap.

The roots are kind of intertwined but its a very simple, but sometimes daunting depending on seedling count, task.
